Well it's been working fine without.
And all the new chargers are now coming out without ign feeds.
All now using engine run detection..... The brand new Renogy IP67 as an example.
...
And the low power throughput I've seen is only when parked idling... As when you drive the alternator...
Bit the bullet, and got
1 x 20A Victron SmartSolar MPPT100-20 - 100Voc, PV Solar Charge Controller - 12V, 24V, 48V Battery
1 x VictronOrion 12v to 12v 9A 110W DC-DC converter isolated 12--12-9A (110W)
1 x Victron VE Direct to USB interface
1 x Europa Single String DC Switch Disconnector 16A...
You’d expect a new VictronDC-DC at some point, the low efficiency (i.e. the cause of the heat) of the current orion unit just doesn’t seem up to their usual standards. It can’t be that hard to make an efficient unit as practically everyone else has managed it!
The Tri-Smarts do have a repuation for runing hot as they are now an older design and less efficient - if you've not bought and not in a hurry it's worth hanging for the replacement model...
Choose a battery first, that will specify the maximum charge current it will accept and therefore dictate what DC-DC you need, you can double that rated charge current if running two batteries in parallel.
As a previous poster says, the VictronOrion can run very hot, I'd only consider this...
I'm not sure i fully agree with @Dellmassive on replacing expensive batteries as being the best option. The only protection that is lacking is the low temp.
I know that my caravan obviously doesn't have a DC-DC charger and I do protect myself from problems with low temp by use of a Victron...
ORION XS . . continued
looks like Victron are slowly adding in the features for the new units.
we have a new BETA release of VICTRON CONECT, - VictronConnect changelog and beta releases [Victron Energy]
and a BETA for the VENUS OS on the CERBO GX - Venus OS v3.20~41 available for testing -...
- why is that?
and from what charge source?
solar will charge the LB 24/7
EHU IP22 will charge the LB 24/7
Orion will charge when engine running.
alternator will charge the starter battery.
unless. . . . .
you connect the EHU IP22 to the STARTER battery. . . . then when the starter...
Thanks for the response sounds like an easy set up.
Just trying to decide between the renology to do everything in one box or the victory Orion 30A as I already have a victron mptt which I can add to.
I have been told about the 50A victron but it too money
Hi @Dellmassive - will get some screenshots when underway tomorrow. Install is under driver's seat so difficult to access without unbolting seat - will check if I have pics from my build. Leisure battery and controller both under driver's seat. Other replies attached.
Steve
if you want a compact setup look at the combined unit.
Ctekd250se
Renogy Dc50/30S
Redarc bcdc1220d
the redarc is the smallest by a large margin.
i have all of these and have shown them over here:

so it looks like the EF Delta2 has a FW tweek to limit the incoming charge current?
or maybe it was always like it?
either way. . . the voltage boost seems to be a viable way to increase the charge rate to a Delt2 and other PPP boxes.
++++
but you need the right DC IN cable, for the EF...
Thanks Deaky. Any chance you can walk me through how to do that and what I'm looking for?
The power control panel would have been switched off during the night - would that have an impact?
Cheers
I was under impression if I started down this route I’d have to change all electrics / hook up etc, well beyond me, is this an incorrect assumption? Is this only required if I went down the lithium battery route?
Orion it’s a buck boost, so if your supply cables are undersized, the voltage received has to bo boosted to the charging voltage set. Hence allot of work and heat. Mine used to be 55C and swapped it for a normal victron dc dc convertor. The converter has a potentiometer and you can adjust the...
@jimthevan
Do I need to install a PV isolator? - when would I need to isolate the PV? - its up to you, if you have a lifepo4 battery without low temp protection you may want to switch off the PV over cold winters, or , some dc-dc chargers like the Renogy . . . you need to switch off the PV to...
Hi All,
Firstly for all of the help people have me when asking about leisure battery installs and what I need to do/purchase. I got some great advice from the likes of @Dellmassive and that’s what makes this forum the great place it is! I ended up buying a DC-DC Vitron Orion kit from Rayne...
The good news is that's a completely standard setup in terms of power requirements, you're not going to need anything very extreme. If it was me, I'd go with an AGM battery with a DC-DC that's expandable to lithium and with a solar input if possible. Adding a solar panel at some point would...
