Most of the 2017 model year seemed to have "Moll" make batteries and these were mostly replaced under warranty at two or three years old, mine included by VW Assistance. Stop start relies on the battery being in a good state and the ECU will bypass stop/start if the battery is soft.

So… If I disconnect the sensor from the battery the stop start stops working. Can a standard battery be used as I was told it just reverts back to a see to a standard alternator output and the bluemotion doesn’t work either (which I hate!)

Post a few pics of the front AMD side of the van... The grill, repeater indicators and side mirrors will tell you what the van model is. And no stop start is also a clue.
