At 170K Km I’d say your EGR was toast, you did well to get that far with it.

I’m on 110k think a dpf clean etc may be a good call tbh will look into it cheers!

Mine has passed its MoT no problem since it forgot it had an egr. Regens are pretty much the same. 170 miles urban 250 on a run. Stops me worrying about buying a new engine.

This van didn't have any EGR fault? Do you mean the notorious code P0401 - Insufficient flow - which has been rumbled on around our forum? No, it's a separate issue - and doesn't cause limp mode. Good thing is the EGR (cooler) can be even diagnosed/measured well before the actual code surfaces...

Issue sorted, ended up being a faulty secondary coolant pump and corroded wiring to the same coolant pump! Alot of work but worth it in my case

Not helping at all but sounds that indeed was only OBD checker (emissions) - not a tester for VW internals. Flashing glow plug light definitely leaves traces into ECU fault memory.
