Main chassis earth strap is a known problem. Try using a jumper cable from the engine block to battery neg post and see if it starts. If so look at the earth strap.

No Never mind the strap. This side of the shunt is the one that should be connected to vehicle chassis. I just used the strap for that connection.

...was trying to suggest connecting a jump lead from the battery negative to a ground point on the engine block to see if the issue was with the earth strap on the engine. While it's not usually a good idea to connect straight to the battery past the shunt in this case it's fine for a quick test.

When this happened on my Renault tragic the AA guy swapped the engine earth strap and all was well. Apart from the fact that it was still a Renault! To be fair it was a good work horse!

Not uncommon for issues with main chassis earth, check the earth strap in front/to the left of the battery (stood in front of van facing the engine bay) Can give weird issues that come and go and would be similar to loose battery terminal

I would be checking all the battery and alternator connections- positive and earth. There is a known issue with a corroding earth strap connection. After that I would start to suspect the alternator itself. Pete

Do you have any connections to the -ve post on your starter battery other than the original VW OEM earth strap?

Check the earth strap at the Aux belt end of the engine to chassis.

If you can hear the relays clicking it might be starter motor related, like corroded connection or bad earth strap to the chassis at the cam belt cover end.

you mean on the earth strap side of shunt? but wouldn't that then be bypassing the shunt?
