110PS LWB T30 for a Camper ok?

Hi all
Looking at a 2021 T30 2.0 TDi. It's 110bhp and looking for advice. Mileage for the age is brilliant and it has everything we want for what we want to pay. But is the 110 ok? We won't be towing but will be putting in a full conversion.
Not looking to thrash it down the motorway or anything, but just want to make sure it would cope.
Husband also talks about remapping but is it worth it?

Depends who you ask..

Very much personal choice really. But personally I didn’t think the 110 engine had enough power for me in a camper, and I also wanted the 6th gear, so the 150 was the logical choice for me, particularly as I plan some long runs and motorway driving. Test drive both if you can to see what you think.

It’s a camper (we are away in it today fully loaded) and the 110 feels a bit underpowered pulling away from static/low speed but fine when moving.

110 will be fine. It will struggle a bit on hills though.
Remap to 150bhp is well worth it.
@Dundee_Kev on here has a fully converted camper and has only 84bhp in his and he has no problem with it.

My 102 struggles on longer or steeper hills when loaded but not so much as I consider remapping it. Rest of the time it’s fine, despite still carrying some camping kit. We’ve had five people, all their gear for two weeks, the dog and her food/toys/bedding and two mountain bikes and all the tools/kit we use when riding those… still got round with no worries.

When they’re all tarted up and firmly part of your lifestyle it’s easy to forget these things are still vans - commercial vehicles designed to lug weight and with gearing easily up to the task of getting you moving. First is very short and when unloaded you change out of it almost immediately. Once you have momentum you just need to worry about stopping.
Also, ours is a camper so travelling in it is largely part of the holiday - so I’m in no inclination to rush about at full speed and getting stressed and generally we will be sat in queues surrounded by everyone else that went on holiday that day!

You'll be fine with the 110 PS engine - as mentioned, the short gearing ensures you'll get up any hill even when fully loaded, just a little slower than with a more powerful engine. Unless you have a really heavy conversion and are carrying 5 adults with masses of kit, the payload of the T30 should also be sufficient.

We have a 102 and had it for nearly 10 years now .
We do europe for 3 months in the winter , fully loaded and although it isn't racing up some of the climbs through the pyrenees i've never had any issues getting anywhere comfortably in it .
A remap would make it easier so your not up and down the box quite so much.
I always intended to map ours but never got around to it and its not bothered me enough to prioritise.
Its a van not a race car .
Yes it would be nice to have the stronger 6 speed box but having a/c and not being white was higher up the wishlist .

I have a 110 kombi t6.1, had a 150bhp t6 before - it’s a kombi and gets loaded up with the kids and bikes (not a conversion) and is perfectly fine - as per comments above, having a 6th gear for motorways will probably be helpful. I was fully expecting to get a remap but decided it’s not worth it tbh

I have a T6.1 110bhp 5 speed 6seater day van which we carry all our camping gear etc, and I find the performance quite adequate.

John.

As said above, it would be fine. Our 102 fully laden converted camper has coped admirably after just completing a 5200 mile trip to Norway and back.
The mountians there are pretty decent, almost climbing and descending one a day or so it seemed..no problem. On the journey there averaged 32mpg and on the way home 36mpg....all motorways at 60mph.

If its been used for towing as a builders van this may of 'weakened' the gearbox already.

Downhill on the way back

I have a 102bhp LWB kombi, it's used as a working van so is fully loaded with tools etc.
It's a reliable engine though as pointed out not the quickest up steep hills.
I'd be wary of a re map having read multiple
accounts of turbo failures, clogged DPF's and EGR problems, for what often seems like limited improvements in performance.
Added to that it puts you at risk of MOT failure, my attitude is if it ain't broke don't fix it.
