4Motion Prop Shaft and CV Joints

Hi all,

Looking for a bit of advice on my propshaft please. Van is a 2012 T5.1 LWB.

I was investigating some sporadic clunking under the van, and am fairly sure it is to do with one of the propshaft CV joints. On my van there are three parts to the shaft, with a total of 4 CV joints - back of the gearbox, just before the first bearing carrier, second bearing carrier, and then into the rear diff and 4motion assembly. The second one just in front of the first bearing carrier seems to be spitting grease out, and it slides back and forwards with a bit of a notch in it rather than smoothly.

I have read a couple of threads, and seen the part numbers posted here. I am also in the process of speaking to a couple of specialists to see if they can provide parts.

My questions if anyone has any experience:
1. Anyone else seen something like this? I am guessing the seal has failed and so grease is leaking out. It will probably get warm and fail if I don't address it soonish.

2. Any recommendations on refurb - I have seen some guides on taking apart CV joints, but never actually done it. I think it looks manageable, but again experience of it and opinions welcomed.

3. I am wondering if whilst I am under there I should also be looking to replace the bearing carriers. They seem in one piece right now but if I do it all at once hopefully everything is good for a long time. I see Darkside/JXB do uprated ones but whether they are noisier or not, I am not sure (again, there is a thread that mentions it, but not a large consensus).

I intend to speak to VW just to laugh at the price, and probably be told that they don't sell individual parts, and that I need to replace the gearbox, shaft and rear diff at the very least, probably requiring most of the drivetrain, because it just isn't a serviceable part sir.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Mine has done the same thing today and it's causing juddering at low speeds. It's going to be done next Thursday to be recon as vw has quoted 1400 for a new one:rolleyes: it's just a van that keeps giving

A CV joint has also gone? The same one?

When you say you are going recon do you mean the whole shaft or just the joint? And are you doing it yourself? Thanks.

No taking it back to garage that just fitted the engine as they want to give it a once over now it's done some mileage. Plus they removed the prop so they said it's on them. Yeah it's the same one with the bang same grease pattern on the heat shield.

That's really interesting. I also had a new engine and my suspicion here was that maybe the prop shaft was allowed to drop whilst disconnected from the gearbox, and has damaged the seal. Nothing I can do now, it was too long ago to prove one way or another, but sounds like it could be the problem.

Like you, the quote for a replacement is £1315 without the VAT, which is frankly insane, and I have now spoken to three prop shaft specialists, and they are all uninterested in looking at it (too busy, nice situation for them).

I can find the seal kit for when you replace the bearing carriers, but this doesn't seem to include what I assume is the rubber seal in the CV joint that has probably failed.

Nor can I find CV joints for sale, only prop shaft sections.

He said he had to split it there as he couldn't break it away at the ends where it should have come away. There's a couple of places around here that he will probably use.

I am hoping that doesn't end up being the case when I try and take mine off.

I am still confused where the grease has even come from - the boot and all around on the shaft is dry as a bone.

Just an update for you. The new gasket had failed and that's why its throwing grease out. The problem I've got now is after it was fixed, it was running silky smooth for about 200 miles. Then I got a judder back, Thought it was the same thing but no worse. One of the bearings has become missed shaped slightly and has broken through the gold cup casing and the grease has escaped into the shaft so running the bearings dry. So now I'm busless until a new shaft arrives as you can't get hold of the centre bearing without the prop:mad:.

There's a place in Bristol, prop shaft company who may be able to refit bearings, did some for us.

Are you talking about the carrier bearings or the cv joints because you can definitely get the carrier bearings without the prop. I have some right now. The issue is you have to disassemble the cv joints to replace them, but it can be done.

If it is the cv joint I have found similar issues with getting hold of them. I have spoken to a lot of prop shaft companies and most of them weren’t overly helpful.

However the one I can recommend is D and F Propshafts in Leeds. They will recondition it if you can send it to them for about £150 a joint, or about £850 for an entirely new shaft. It might be cheaper if yours is not a lwb like mine with 4 joints and 3 parts to the shaft. Turnaround time was 3-5 days.

Yeah it's the cv bearing that gone. I'll give them a try as it was late when I got to the bottom of the problem. Out if curiosity did you run without your prop whilst it was being repaired?

No. I couldn’t make up my mind whether it was going to be ok or not - no drive to the rear transfer box so thinks it isn’t moving, but abs sensors etc says it is….

In the end I didn’t risk it.

I'm not going to chance it either. I've ordered a full new propshaft today so should be here Monday hopefully and that will be the end of my spending.
