Really pleased to get my first 2018 T6 Kombi Edition 150hp DSG model in Sept 2022. I brought the van from a main dealer, and it had already had a partial conversation carried out by a specialist on the south coast, although the converter is no longer around.
The van came with a 230v elec hook up and leisure battery system. I have done a lot of reading on the battery charging systems suitable for a van of this nature, but I am struggling to identify whether the system I have installed is 1) suitable, and 2) functioning correctly.
The leisure battery is a 110ah Sterling VRLA mounted under the single passenger seat. This is paired with an Albright SU80-5162PL contactor mounted next to the main battery. There is not much information online about this contactor being used in a battery to battery charging system.
Is this setup suitable for a EURO 6 T6?
I've been monitoring the voltage of both the main and leisure battery, and as far as I can tell they are always identical. This tells me that the two batteries appear always to operate in parallel. I've been out to the van and disconnected the red control cable from the coil of the SU80 contactor. When I remove this cable, I can here the contactor de-energise. Which tells me something is permanently energising the coil, for some reason. I have carried out this test, with the engine off, van locked, and with the engine running. However, it remains energised.
Can anyone suggest how this should operate under normal working conditions, and what energise and de-energises this contactor?
I've enclosed a couple of images of the setup. Once, I get my head around the charging system I want to tidy up some of the leisure battery second circuits and identify these better. At present they are all hanging under the passenger seat.
One option may be to install an industry standard B2B charger, however I would like to understand the setup I currently have more before making a decision on this.
I'd really appreciate any guidance on the device in question, and the way it is setup.
