Am I being too cautious ?

Hi all, Just registered to this website today, after months of reading and researching this great forum.

I viewed a T6, T32 today which is being sold privately for just under £30k. This would be our first camper van and I am not particularly mechanically minded. The seller was very accommodating, we had a test drive, detailed explanation of the work which they have had done and who by, amount of money spent on it etc and reasons for sale.

As I am writing this a few alarm bells are starting to sound, or am I just being too cautious?

The advert is stating as having full service history. The seller has shown me a Volkswagen printed service records but the last service was May-2021 at c 50,000 miles. The vehicle has done 96k miles. so it is missing service history for the last 50k miles / 3 years, which to me is a long time.

A carried out a £15 AA HPI / Vehicle check, which states that there are two previous owners. The sellers say that they bought it off the previous owner who had purchased it from new. Is it likely that the vehicle was register with a dealership from new which counts for one of the owners, or something like this ?

The conversion looks great, and obviously spent a lot of money on it and they say that the work was done by three reputable companies (they have told me 2 of the 3). However, they will not share the invoices with me until after completing the sale. They have shown some receipts, including timing belts and water pumps, which they have had done.

The sellers purchased it in Sep-24, I've no doubt questioning their reason for selling after a few months.

I do love this van but will never forgive myself if something goes wrong. I have considered a AA /RAC inspection but the lack of paperwork and service history is making me feel uneasy with this purchase.

Be grateful to hear what the members of this forum think?

How about a beautiful yellow van for £25k that has had everything done to it from a member on here we all know and love?! I just forget Chris's name now....

I would walk away from this one.
The fact there is no service history since May 2021 would be the first red flag.
The fact the seller won’t share the invoices with you would be the second red flag.

Now the bit about owners could be that the van was registered by say VW to hit targets meaning they were the first owner.
Then the company converting the van bought it and had it in trade and did their work and sold it completed to the first owner of the full conversion meaning they are owner number 2 of the van but the first owner of the converted van.
The person who has it now is the third owner but the second of the conversion.

There are loads of good vans to be found but you may have to be prepared to travel for the best ones

I would have thought that not showing you the invoices would be more than enough to say 'Bye bye'.
If I had a van with lots spent on it and was looking to sell it, I'd want the buyer to know exactly what they were getting.

I just can't understand why they wouldn't show you invoices?!

Not as bad as when I bought my Mk5 Golf, folder full of invoices, which the dealer showed me, but couldn't give me due to GDPR laws... shredded it then and there infront of me... :(

Maybe they were not wanting to give you details of name and address of previous owner? If a dealer sells a car and the big end goes, they wouldn’t want the new buyer going round the previous seller’s house. And, they would also not be able to keep that data, as they no longer had a legitimate need for it.

I agree if it’s a private sale, then not such an issue, as a) you can do what you like with your own data, and b) probably the buyer already knows where the seller lives if viewed at home. If I was selling my van I’d be happy to share my conversion invoices data.
