Apple car play issue

Hi, first post as a new member.

I’ve just recently purchased a 2017 T6 shuttle with a head unit that has App connect for android auto, apple carplay and mirrorlink. Android auto works instantly when plugged in, apple car play doesn’t recognise my iPhone plugged in. Also in the connection preferences there isn’t an option to use apple carplay, just for android auto and mirrorlink. I’ve been to VW main dealer and they’re feeling was it’s a head unit replacement. A local car audio company had never seen the issue before where android work but apple car play wasn’t available as a preferred connection.

Anyone else had this issue / know of a fix.

Don’t really want to replace the head unit, it’ll be cheaper to get an android phone.

Thanks in advance.

If you pop out the usb connection by the left hand side of the heater controls, I'd check to see what part number is fitted. Needs to be 5Q0 035 726 E to work with an iPhone. This would be my first port of call, especially if it may have had a new (upgraded radio unit) fitted.

I have the problem that my phone loses connection. an original apple cable made it better but still not solved.
Do you use an original one?

Cheers for the replies all,

I’ve tried an original apple cable and a VW cable and neither worked.

I’ll check the usb part number in the morning.

Morning Phil_j89,
Part number is one digit out, instead of the “E” suffix it’s an “N”. Do you think this would make the difference?
I’ve attached a couple of photos, app connect screen showing Apple CarPlay & pref. connection type. No Apple car play.

Is the connector for the loom, on the usb green?

That will be the issue, the usb connections that work with apple play have a green port for the connector to go into.

The usb slot pushes out of the dash, then you can remove the usb port, and fit the one with the ‘E’ instead.

Doesn’t need any kind of coding once replaced.

I would guess your vehicle left the factory without carplay and a previous owner has had it activated but not changed the USB socket to an apple compatible one (prob an android user)

That looks like the correct but seems a touch expensive, prob quicker and cheaper from your local main dealer

I take it back, just double checked and the units RRP at a dealer is £42.65 + vat
Gone up a bit since i last bought one

It’s all looking positive! I’ll get one purchased and feed back to you.

Thanks both, Pauly and Phil_J89
