Black smoke at high revs

I noticed today that I get black smoke when I accelerate hard above 2500rpm.
It was coming up a steep hill. I don’t normally take the revs up to 3000rpm but needed to because of the incline.
Thats when I noticed in 2nd or 3rd gear at 3000rpm I get a puff of black smoke.
I’ve not long had the van serviced and have never noticed this before.
You don’t notice any smoke at all driving normally.
Any ideas guys?

Usually a sign of air fuel ratio. Not getting enough air for complete combustion.

Did you notice it was down on power?...

I've had black smoke under acceleration before.

Had a intercooler boost hose leak.

And, and a turbo, under boost pressure problem.

Both had reduced power as a symptom.

Yeh I think it’s struggling a bit more on hills etc

Suppose a engine scan is in order to see if you have any codes stored.

But If it's mapped.... You might be best going back to the mapper as the map changes are unknown and different from stock.

You never know what's tweeked from the factory map. Boost pressure and fuel rail pressure are normally standard tuning tweaks.

Any hissing noises from under the bonnet when blipping the throttle?

.....

Boost leak?
EGR sticking open/closed?
Dpf blocked?
Turbo variable vanes sticking?
Turbo blades cooked?
Burn Hole in plastic inlet manifold?
......

Are you burning excessive oil?

.......

Only if it's a generic map if it's a descent map there's lots that gets adjusted @AutotechVagspecialist can advise further

Hi from my Experience if there is a smoke when full throttle then there is several things that can do this

1. bad map over fuelling on full throttle with a dpf in place this is not good and will lead to the dpf failing.
2. DPF has been removed then this can happen and will need addressing in the map to fix.
3. EGR is open leaking and there for not making the correct boost levels in turn over fuelling due to this.

Thanks for your reply.
I never noticed this before so am pretty sure it wasn’t like this on last years big trip.
So I’m guessing it’s probably something like the EGR or DPF.
The van got remapped by the converter but it will be a generic map.
The van runs great it’s only on full acceleration above 2500 rpm in second and 3rd that I get black smoke. Quite a lot too.
4th seems fine full throttle high revs.
I’ve not long had my van in and checked on VCDS for a problem I had with my lights and no engine codes came up.
I noticed another member posted a good review of transporter specialists not far from me so am thinking I will give them a phone.
I think spending money on a proper custom map will probably be money well spent.
Looking a bigger brakes now too.

Thanks for your help Lee.
I’ve not had to top up the oil at all yet but it was in for a full service a few weeks ago.
I’m not hearing any boost leaks and you would never know there was a problem driving it normally so don’t see the turbo as being the problem.
As I mentioned above I suspect it will be a DPF or EGR issue or maybe poor generic map.
