Broken coil…on the double

Don’t know if it’s just a coincidence but…
Sunday I was driving down the motorway and I felt something was off with the van…pulling left as never before… I thought something wasn’t right from the first day I picked it up the 21st of April. I thought it was the cheap cinese tyres and replaced them with Michelin. It was driving better but not 100% happy. Today I took it for a 4 wheel alignment and local garage found a broken coil rear off side.
Bought the van (16 plate) with 42.000 miles on it and it happens my old 2009 Velle had a broken coil spring at the same mileage!
I wonder if they still use the same manufacturer and spring.Such a coincidence!
Never had to replace springs on any car I had and with trasporter twice In a row.
The Dealer already booked it next week Tuesday but they already said VW policy is to replace only one. My old Velle broke the second coil 2 weeks after the first was replaced… I will have them to replace the opposite coil regardless.
Since I am replacing both rear coils, is there any other job to be done once there?

I had one go in my old T5.1 - discovered during MOT. I replaced both. Garage was surprised as they usually have customers just replace one but agrees that it was better to replace both. He didn’t charge any extra labour either

Its a common thing on all vehicles - my Skoda Superb had a rear one go and still passed an MOT :-0 !

You always see broken bits of spring at the side of the road - I think its sleeping policemen, general road condition and quality if the springs!

I bought my 66 plate T30 in September 2020. A private sale, seller agreed to have a VW service and MOT included. A broken rear spring discovered. Only 18,000 miles and a very well looked after vehicle.

Van is in at VW for coil replacement under warranty. However I was told it’s VW policy to replace only the broken coil not both.
I have decided to get the opposite done at the same time regardless.
I have also noticed rear pads wearing thin. Possibly they will pass it that under warranty ( bought the car less than 1000 miles ago). Mot as well a bit earlier than expected (6th of June).

Van was in at Vw to replace coils + MOT+rear pads.
However I find it quite annoying they took it in for MOT and it didn’t pass because of broken coil and advisory for thin pads to the rear.
And more annoying I had to pay for the repair and now I will have to claim the money back through warranty.

That’s a blooming joke!

I never use main dealer. My old van was successfully looked after by my local indie but when I bought this van they have thrown in 2 services and the first Mot, plus 2 additional years of Extended warranty (not Vw though). So, kind of tied in now.

Just to add wood to the fire… I have now realised (didn’t have time before now) they have charged me 115+vat for one hour labour to replace the 130+ vat coil.
The one under warranty has been charged 55 for one hour and 115+Vat for the coil.

Ah well, 6 years and 45000 miles.....Front coil spring drivers side making a horrible noise! Long story short......it's either gonna be £500 or £600 to replace the pair at VW dealer. They won't know which until they see it! It's booked in but if anyone knows a trusted garage up in North Yorkshire, let me know. It's probably time to leave the main dealer. I did wonder if it's time to get a new suspension set up anyway........but I don't want it slammed! Is there a mild suspension mod that anyone can recommend?

I’d speak to Steve at CRS and get his advice. It may be that he has some very nearly new springs that were take-offs that he can sort at a decent price.

Cheers Mate........it's also a question of finding someone to fit them. I think the money is in the fitting.........3 hours labour at vw rates!! I'm hoping someone can suggest a trusted garage in Noth Yorks. Cheers bruv!

3 hours?
CRS replaced my whole suspension, front and rear, in way less time than that. AND that included completely removing the front new springs and dampers after they had been fitted, to adjust them as the front was sitting a fraction too low. Then completely refit.
So they basically did the fronts twice and the rears and I’d be surprised if it took much more than an hour.
I’m in Yorkshire too (west) and sometimes it’s worth a little trip out to get the job done properly at the right price.

Where's CRS mate?

Cannock. They have their own thread on here and are one of the ‘go to’ places for T6 suspension.

Or just use Halfords. Their quote to replace both rear springs was 200 quid including labour. ( however replacing rear springs on a T6 is very simple and probably takes 30 min.

Yep, my suspension was upgraded by CRS in the time I wandered into a supermarket for a brekkie, then back via a nature reserve where I saw a deer, lovely. Think less than 2 hours. Pricing is very clear, Steves are lovely, well worth a drive.

My van is driving much better! The able assistant is also very pleased, especially when we had to make an emergency stop on a tatty lane on Thursday and the dogs weren't thrown forward at all. Much, much better.

As @Bigsidavies says, @CRS Performance are suspension specialists…. I personally wouldn’t waste your time or money taking it anywhere else. Give Steve a call to discuss what you want and even with the day trip to Cannock you’ll probably save yourself some money. Better still if you’re thinking of upgrading your suspension, Steve is the man for the job!
