Broken springs:

I was under the rear of my van (T6 T28) to replace the spare wheel and I noticed what appears to be part of a broken spring at the top of the rear coil springs, on both sides. They are obviously a smaller diameter than the main springs, so what are they?

The top of your spring has snapped off and the spring will have to be replaced. It's an MOT failure.
Worth checking the front ones too.

They are the top coil of the spring what has broken off, still trapped in situ by pressure from the spring below,

Ok thanks, I didn't know that the spring diameter could be tapered like that.

Yes commonly known as the pigtail, happens very regularly on modern cars
