i have floor brackets in my kombi van can i floor over them as i think its a hassle to remove them
Help please

It’s not such a big job, especially compared with the rest of the van conversion, they also have re-sale value.

Much easier than I was expecting with the fuel tank almost empty (low reserve).
On a T32 with standard 17” wheels and suspension I only needed to raise the rear wheels by 6” (breeze blocks), if you’re claustrophobic or a pie addict you might need to go higher.
Tie a thin rope to the cold exhaust and lead it clear of the van on the near side, it should be positioned midway (front to back) under the tank so that an assistant can take the weight of the tank with the rope.
Remove the screw and free up the filler neck to allow it to drop with the tank.
Slacken all 4 bolts by approx 3 turns on the 2 tank securing straps.
With the assistant taking the tanks load on the rope remove the 2 inner bolts on the 2 tank securing straps.
Allow the straps to drop and rotate clear of the tank, there is no need to remove the straps completely as this will make refitting much harder later.
The assistant can then gently lower the tank to the floor allowing access for removal of the seat brackets.
Re-installation is the reverse of removal. Don’t forget to remove the rope!

Thanks it's a year old van and I don't want to chance doing something that might go wrong and cost me money.

has anyone just ply boarded over them

I have only just joined the forum and have been searching the posts as I shall need to drop my fuel tank to fix a diesel heater. I am really grateful to the top tip from DXX in using a rope to lower the tank and now I am fully armed with the knowledge that it all seems pretty straight forward.

I was prompted to answer your post as I have previously converted a T5 panel van as a camper which could be converted to function both as a kombi in about half an hour of removing the camper element. I installed a plywood floor around the seat brackets and fitted carpet to the ply. I then fitted another plywood floor over that and the seat brackets with some kitchen and wardrobe units that were clipped to the van sides and easily removable plus a plywood seat which converted to a bed and more carpet to the living area. (All this was using materials that I managed to acquire FOC)

However for a one year old van I would suggest that it will be much better for you to consider removing the brackets and "doing a proper job." I believe that it will be easier in the end as I suppose that you are considering fitting the new ply floor over the existing Kombi mat which will give you problems in providing secure fixings for any seats or furniture. By installing a new floor you will probably avoid the need to purchase a new step and rear threshold so you could offset that cost against getting an independent garage to drop the tank for you if you feel that you are too nervous to attempt removing them yourself.

You can but I wouldn’t. The floor will be too high, the step and threshold will not fit and the B pillars plastics will need trimmed. Much better to remove them. Where are you based? We can remove them for you if not are not happy to do so.

Hi, Sorry to bump the thread but once the fixings are removed, what is the best way to plug the holes on the floor?
