Clutch: Should I chance it?

Evening All,

The clutch has started to slip in first gear. Not all the time and seems fine in the rest of the gears (5 speed 102bhp - 87k miles). Had quotes from £900 to £1200 for the clutch and dual mass flywheel. What’s your thoughts should I chance it and keep driving it or bite the bullet and get it swapped out?

I would get it sorted if I were you...peace of mind then and it won't fail you at the most inconvenient time or do any further damage.

It can only get worse. I’ve driven cars for 1000’s of miles after the slippage started without issues but eventually it will need replacing.
If you have another mode of transport or don’t have to be punctual then I wouldn’t be too alarmed.

I am sure you can do away with the DMF and put in a normal clutch kit.
not sure what difference it makes. Something I would consider.

Changing the DMF at the same time is just saving the labour on the job that might need doing at some point in the future. Whilst it's all apart to do the clutch, it's a simple job.

If the van is a keeper, it makes sense to do it.

Perhaps sticky/slow clutch release? The clutch is strained most at high gears. I would verify engine at 1500...2000 rpm at gear 5 (preferably) running uphill - then full throttle - see if the clutch slips now.

Agreed, I don't see the point putting off the inevitable, it's only going to get worse until it's fixed.

Reversing up a steep hill will show a slipping clutch.
