Coilovers: H&R v Bilstein

Hi everyone,

I’m going to be taking delivery of a brand new T6.1 on Monday and I’m definitely going to be fitting coilovers. I’m trying decide between H&R or Bilstein and wondered what people thoughts were?

I’ve got H&R lowering springs on my 17-year old Vito, and have been very pleased with them, but the Bilstein’s seem very popular amongst the T5/T6 fraternity.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you. I didn’t know KW offered coilovers for the T6.1.
Yes mate, for a while now:
As we come under pressure to supply dedicated parts for the new T 6.1 we have good news about products that we at CRS are about to launch .

The new H&R A R B kit will have a 30 mm diameter front bar and a 30 mm diameter rear bar. there will be a front only version and of course one for the specialist lighting model and one for vans with out .

The new lowering springs will also be ready quite soon

The great news is that our Coil over kit which has proved to be a game changer over the last few months will also be available with a few new features , The most important being additional road noise isolation , something that most of our clients are already noticing and commenting on when we fit this kit for them .
If any one wants to pre order , we will be offering introductory promo pricing , feel free to express interest with us and we will notify you on arrival .
The lead time for these parts from the factory is 8 weeks . ( if things get back to normal soon )

I had Bilstein B14s, moved to a H&R spring and damper set up and bitterly regretted it. Great handling but a truly terrible ride.
I now have KW Variant 1 and am much happier.

What exactly was the H&R Spring/damper setup, and what was so terrible about the ride for you? I'm still trying to decide what suspension to go for.

Try and drive them both back to back. You can make your own mind up. And the KW/ST I’d a great option to think about too.

So many options …..

I have the bilstein B14 comforts and 20 inch alloys and the handling and ride are spot on.. much smoother than standard.

H&R spring/damper set up from CRS. Basically an unyielding ride - really hard, little compliance. Came to hate every mile on that suspension.

I can’t comment on the Bilstein’s because I’ve never had them, but I went from 40mm H&R lowering springs and standard shocks (harsh and crashy) to the TUV approved H&R Coilovers fitted by @CRS Performance roughly eighteen months ago and it’s some of the best money I’ve invested in my van. Gives you the option of lowering between 50 - 80mm if I remember correctly.

Thats a surprise, if it was the true coilovers not a spring and shock kit, its the first negative thing I have heard about them.
Others have posted about them.
When I first had them fitted I thought they were an improvement but then I noticed just how the van ride never settled (like it did with the B14s) - it was always on the move.
The handling was great but I realised just how little compliance they had - and just how uncomfortable the ride with them.

I’m surprised about this too? I thought the damping could be adjusted to suit…. maybe Steve @CRS Performance or Chris @The Van Cave can confirm please??

Important NOTE here to get this comment in to perspective as its quite misleading !! , The very popular H&R coil over kit is brilliant to drive on , BUT the T32 version of the kit is different, it has upside down MONO tube shocks to cope with the weight carrying capacity of a T32 and achieve T U V approval . Its the strongest shock on the market, its very efficient and highly rated "BUT firm" , This is the kit Yellowhound didnt like , generally you love this kit or hate it . . Its also a full coil over kit NOT a H&R spring kit with Dampers ( that is a different set up altogether ) and We sell 30 to 40 sets a month of this arrangement and results are brilliant . !!!! ,
