Has anyone successfully fitted airbags to a coil set-up? It looks like it might be possible with maxpeedingrods but not 100% sure.
Having previously been a mechanic and later auto electrician, I have very little faith in a purely airbag system. When a coil spring breaks, you can generally still drive comfortably, but when an airbag (or compressor) fails it's horrendous to drive. I also don't want to be stranded in Europe, relying on English hating mechanics looking to rip off tourists (not saying that's the majority, but some would).
I currently have a high ride height, particularly at the rear on my exRAC T6 and looking to lower it so I can get under height barriers. Also want airbags so I can raise the height for driving over rutted fields, as well as to level the van when sleeping.
Thinking of fitting 40mm lowering springs to bring it under 2m (the height of most barriers I would want to drive under), but run the airbags with a little air in day to day for a more comfortable ride.
Am I thinking along the right lines? Anyone have any experience of doing this?
