Composition Media System packed up…

Hi all.

Haven’t been on here for ages, but I know this is a great place for advice.

Today, my composition media unit (standard equipment on my T6) has packed up. It doesn’t turn on or display any sign of life on screen. No music or phone. Just nothing. Nada. Zip from the unit. The reversing sensors still work because I get the beeping proximity warning, but no visuals on the screen. (Cos the screen ain’t working!!)

My first thought was “fuses”. My second was “check the handbook”. It was dark when I got home so haven’t looked for the fuse board yet, but I have looked in the handbook. (Which was sod all help…)

So my questions are:

1. Do you, my clever forum fellows, think this could be fuse related or am I being stupidly naive?

2. Anyone had this happen to them? (And if so, what was the issue and how did you resolve it?)

3. Is it worth using this opportunity to upgrade the system?

4. Assuming it’s NOT fuses, is it a big / expensive job to replace a media unit and is my local dealer gonna sting me right royally??!

Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

PS: I’m a transporter driver rather than a fettler. I can barely tell one end of a spanner from the other so please be kind to me!

Hi!

Possibly fuse related but unsure which one it's off. But start at the beginning and work forwards.

Changing the radio can be expensive but depends what you want really. It is a good excuse to upgrade if the unit is actually dead.

Have you a multi meter. Quickest way if your unsure of the fuse. Whip the radio out and test for power but with your ending comment I'm assuming you haven't got a multimeter?

Cheers Chris

Hi Chris

Thanks for the reply. You’re right - I don’t have a multi meter unfortunately.

Years ago I had an Astra which blew some fuses. At least the manual for that car had a list of fuses, their position on the fuse board and their corresponding ampage. Nothing like that in my Transporter manual unfortunately.

I’ll have a look at the board tomorrow.

Cheers

If your a subscribed member @Loz made a plan of the fuse board layout and what each fuse does.

It's so handy I'm putting it on the wall in the new workshop

Well that diagram from @Loz was bloody brilliant!! Just what was needed.
Alas the fuse appears to be intact so I guess it’s over to the VW dealers to investigate. Fingers crossed it’s under warranty…

Ok - further update…
Just got in the van to pop out and radio is only now bloody working!!!
Could it be that I, muppet, have now repaired something on my van simply by taking a fuse out and putting it back??!! Go me!!!!
You couldn’t have done it without that fuse chart…

Yeah possible that it was just stuck and powering down gave it a kick start

Chris - it’s just weird cos I used the van several times yesterday and started/stopped it quite a few times. I’d figured the old “turn it off and on again” thing would have resolved it. Electrics are a total mystery!!!

The unit has a permanent live to it. The CANbus network dictates when it turns on and off so when the key is out the ignition it's never truly off
