After a lot of faf i managed to get a pair of headlights split. I've split many many sets of headlights over the years and these have been the hardest to do, and the biggest.

The reason... i wanted to change the chrome stripe on my T6 grill for a red stripe, pretty cool, adds 12 bhp and makes me feel younger.
But doing so highlights the fact that the design of the stripe continues through the headlights, so red center and outer chrome bits in the lights. Not poopooing anyone who has done this, it just didnt look right for me.
So rather than stick with the crome grill stripe like a normal person i decided to spend a lot more time and money on changing a ridiculously small detail just so i could sleep at night.

I quickly purchased a secondhand pair of headlights and got to the splitting. It took many hours over a few days to get them split. My oven isn't big enough to accommodate such a hefty item so i used a heat gun and many kitchen knives.
Once split i removed the chrome strips. Easy to do. Sanded the chrome off, primed and painted them a nice matching red. Cleaned and resealed with PU. Plenty of tape to keep the lenses and body tight while it cured. Had to heat and flatten some areas of the base flanges as they bent and stretched during the split phase.

All in all very happy with the result. However i only managed one clear picture of the finished unit. They rest have turned gray with a black cross ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I haven't fitted them to the van. And sadlybi may not get around to it at all as i have just blown my christmas money on another golf project.
Thought id post though so people know it is possible. Just be very carefull and take your time.

After all the effort of splitting them, why ever didn't you fit bi-led projectors?
To be honest i dont find the light output that bad on these, with nighbreaker bulbs im more than happy with my current units. Without level control the beam pattern would be flaying retinas all over the carriageway id have thought though??

The main reason though, i didnt want to have to cut them open again if something non factory failed inside. I think I'd just lose my poope and crane technique them across the yard if i had to do that.

Many projectors are mounted through the H4 bulb hole, so the reflector remains in place and the levelling adjustment works as it does now.

Having fitted projectors in a few other headlight, I did attempt to do the same with Transporter ones, but for the like of me I couldn't get them appart.
