Cutting down a Thule 4 bike rack to make a 2 rack.

Hi all, I have a Thule Wanderway 4 bike rack and only need it for 2. They sit really high on the T6 so never easy on uneven ground to attach the top fixings. I have removed the outer 2 rails so I can climb under to fit 1 bike but it really has to do the second. Has anyone cut down the frame to make this easier and allow just the 2 bikes to go on. In so doing, also reducing the length of the overall vehicle. It looks pretty straight forward, with little hassle but would be interested to know if anyone else has experience in this.
