Diesel heater & Leisure Battery

Evening All,

I'm thinking of adding an autoterm D2 diesel heater in the Kombi. The van has been carpeted and insulated with three layer system.

Currently I don't have a leisure battery set up per say and use the ecoflow delta 2 which is more than enough for what I need the odd overnight stay while out running the trails.

My question is do I need a leisure battery for the odd use in the morning when it can get a bit chilly.

Other option is to buy a cheap low watt 240v electric heater for the ecoflow ??

Any thoughts guys ?

Naa, you’ll be fine off the starter battery. They draw about an amp after startup (probably closer to 10 when it fires the igniter), standard battery is 70aH so you’ve got over 2 days before you’ll flatten your battery running the diesel heater.

I had our diesel heater running off the starter battery for a year or so, until I could afford the leisure Electrics, never ran the starter battery flat, but I did have a jump starter battery pack in the van just in case

I done the same as Green Giant. The Autoterm heater detects low voltage and will stop the heater from starting to preserve your battery. Have a look at a Topdon JS3000 jump pack. Reasonably priced but very good.

I recently bought one, must say I'm very impressed with it. Used it at my work for a little while to test it out and has never failed to start anything.

The proper way to do it, is to fit a leisure battery.

A cheap AGM plus split charge relay will work. Or upgrade to a lithium with dc-dc and be done with it.... That's the best option.

Running off the EF D2 reliably is a problem as the 12v output is regulated 12v@8A and will cause you issues on startup and shut down.

Running off the starter is not a good idea unless you are doing a single night with driving the next day..

Camping in the van uses the starter power every time the van is unlocked or door opened...and can run the battery low over a three day weekend.....adding a derv heater to that will end up with a flat battery and running it low regular, which will degrade it.

It also takes 10hrs driving to fully recharge a flat battery the following day.

Carrying a jump pack is always a good idea if you camping or other.

@Dellmassive thanks for the above appreciate it. I would say a couple of nights would be the max at the moment.

If I did go down the leisure battery route what would I need. I'm useless when it comes to electrics.

Already got the GBX75 after your advice

Me too, I seen someone use one on a YouTube video. It was not a promotion so need for him to lie. He started a farm sprayer with a decent size engine. He highly praised it

take a look at this guy . .

he shows an Autoterm running on a powerbank fine . . . but you need to use the 240v side and a 15A or above PSU ( ie victron ip65 15A>)

but shows the problems when trying to run from the EF 12v port.
