Hey guys,
I have noticed a slight whine/growl which sounds like the motor chugging but a slight bit rougher, only when in 6th or 7th gear under load. When coasting it disappears completely.
anybody had this same problem?
Thanks J

Hello I have the exact same issue, did you manage to sort it?

I managed to get the issue to go by putting lightweight 16" alloys on, however moving back to heavy 18" steels or 20" alloys the noise returned.

Let me know please if you found out the issue? Regards

Thanks you so much for a reply, this is what I thought it might be,

What bearing was it (if you know) and do you have a rough cost to get it sorted?

Also what size and type wheels did you have on?

So grateful for you assistance

It’s a definite finding a needle in a haystack to find a specialist company that can repair them, as vw don’t do spares for the dsg gearbox, I had a full rebuild with clutch and due mass fly wheel, was £2500 plus the vat, I run 20” rims with 255/ 45 R20 speed ratio y as they don’t mess you speed and mileage up

Right thanks so much for the info,

Do you happen to have the specialist website or address you used for the repair?

Regards

For your info... the 255/45r20 are 6.6% bigger diameter than the standard 215/60r17 or similar. Your speedo will be slightly off so always worth checking with GPS to know the difference. The speed rating has nothing to do with speedo or mileage, it's purely a measure of their longevity at high speed.

I've got this issue and just done a search on this forum. Same groaning noise type noise in 6 & 7 gears and low revs. Who carried out your repairs please? Need to get mine sorted soonest. Thank you

As per the other thread.

Hello, I did sort my issue out. I went to VW and a gearbox specialist one said a rebuild and VW said you have too heavy wheels.

So I purchased some 18" alloys ( 1form edition 1) and the noise has completely gone.

My thoughts, yes maybe the gearbox has weak bearings that rumble if there is a heavy rolling mass eg large 20" alloys. These weigh 6kg heavier than standard 16" and the 18" steels I had also were 6kg heavier, however, the new 18" alloys are only 2kg heavier than standard and zero noise. Literally fixed.

Possibly if you get a rebuild you may be able to run 20" again. However the wear or stress just ain't worth it.

I'm happy with smaller comfortable ride wheels. And no noise.

Hopefully this helps. Happy to clarify any details.
