Dsg no drive with new driveshaft and spider wheel

Hello!

Lost drive on my t6 dsg 140hp t5 caac engine before Christmas :(

Talked to the local well known workshop and booked a rapair for the “common?” Driveshaft and spline issue. They have put a new driveshaft and a new female spiderwheel in the diff. Still no drive according to the workshop, and they were pretty clueless today what could be the issue.

It wants to drive a little in D, but nothing in R the workshop told me. I think they gonna look into the mechtronic next.
Feels wierd to have failing driveshaft splines and a failed mechatronic unit at the same time? Any ideas or anyone with similar experience?

Hi there,

If it’s mechatronics it will have a fault code, usually flashes number 2 on the dash.
Is there any only leaking? DSG will not drive if oil is low

I can only offer sympathy unfortunately. My mechanical functions are as useless as a chocolate screwdriver. I hope that someone with specific knowledge answers your post. Perhaps your workshop will work something out. Are they familiar with the T6 or a VW specialist?

I see a more knowledgable person has provided some information as I write.:)

I guess/hope they would have told me if there were any fault codes or oil leak but I will have that in mind in the next contact with them.

it worked as a charm, smooth shifting, oil change in gearbox every 3000km and just quit driving entering a roundabout. No warnings and the spline issue sounded like a logic reason for the lost drive. It’s a good shop with good reputation, local VAG don’t rapair only swaps gearboxes what I’ve been told.

If I understand the gearbox right, worn down driveshaft splines wouldn’t cause any damage to the gearbox and mechatronic? I understand it will only rotate inside and make a nightmareish noise

It needs the faults checking first with a code reader. Sounds like you’re well up with maintenance so doubt the oil level will be low.

DSG does have a clutch but again this would give a fault code.

It would be interesting to see if the number 2 was flashing on the dash. Usually when they go into limp mode they still drive.

Worn splines are usually the causes of loss of drive with no warning.

Have you actually seen the worn driveshaft and differential side gear? Ie, did the garage guess it was this fault or dismantle things and verify, before going ahead and ordering new parts. If they haven't shown you the worn parts, and are evasive about showing them, I suspect they guessed, and the problem probably wasn't a worn driveshaft.
Another red flag, is the gearbox needs to be split open to change the side gear, does it look like the gearbox has been apart, ie witness marks and fresh gasket sealant on the joints?
No, a worn driveshaft wont affect the internals of the gearbox, as the side gear splines are effectively external to the gearbox, so any rust and metal shards fall outwards on to the road.
