DSG Reliability

Last year I sold my T4.
(I injured my left knee at work and driving a manual van was making it worse. )
So Im going to take the plunge and get myself an automatic T6., I've read to many horror stories about T4 autos to risk one of those.
So good people, any useful info, recommendations, things to avoid , etc etc.
Thanks all.

+1 for the dsg. They are great and seem to be really well suited to the t6. As @TallPaul_S says just make sure it’s been serviced.

Also, if you're coming from a manual you'll probably notice a bit of a delay when pulling away (especially when trying to pull away quickly) but you soon get used to it - in sport mode you can take off pretty damn quickly!

Love the DSG in our Golf and kind of wish the van had it too (van is a 5 speed manual).

The Golf has been faultless so far with 112k miles and still on the original clutch. As mentioned above just keep on top of the oil changes. It’s around £350 at main dealer but it might take you a while to do 40k miles.

When I bought the Golf it couldn’t have the seven speed box the smaller petrol engine Golf’s had - apparently it was too weak at that time for the torque of the 2.0l diesel 150. That was 2014 and they changed things soon after I believe. Personally I never feel I’m missing out by not having seven speeds in it.

The DSG gearbox is pretty bullet proof, as long as you keep up the servicing on it, at the intervals mentioned above. I’ve only known about one mechanics unit and one gearbox replacement under warranty on a DSG - ironically both my own cars and back in 2007/2008 ish on a Golf GTI and Golf R32. So a long time ago. (Wasn’t my driving BTW :fast rofl: )

The 7 speed is well suited to the Transporter and how it drives and of course we can improve it with TVS software- it gets rid of the delay mentioned above(if your box has it - they are all different) as well as other positives like quicker gear changes.

If I have understood correctly the DQ500 7-speed DSG service has usually only oil change, but there is a changeable filter also, which should be changed also to prolong the lifecycle of the gearbox.

Really happy with my DSG (my first).
First job I had done was an oil change. Just a shade over £200 so not crazy money for an important job.
