EGR cooler/valve life expectancy

Hi. I’ve got a 67 plate Kombi, CXGB 102PS that’s had a history of EGR fault codes ‘insufficient flow’. It came to the end of an extended VW warranty in May and the dreaded amber warning light (exhaust fault) has just reappeared.

I’m the second owner; I bought it at 3.5 years old with 77k on the clock and it had already had one EGR flush in 2019 and then the valve replaced in Nov 2020 at 55k. It was VW Approved and the previous owner had done mainly motorway miles.

I use it as a second car, mainly to take the kids to sports and long motorway trips. I rarely do short trips and don’t use it for commuting. Since I bought it in April 2021 it’s had 4 EGR flushes and 2 EGR pipes. These are quite evenly spaced, about every 9 months and 7k miles. The last flush and pipe change was in April 2024. Van has currently done 103k miles.

Up until now it’s all been covered under VW warranty but not now! I know the EGR is a known thing with these engines but this quantity of problem seems excessive, especially as I’m not doing low-RPM town driving. I’d be grateful if anyone can shed a light on if this is normal or whether the actual cause may be something else. The van runs fine with no smells or hesitation, and MPG is as expected at average 45. It’s always been serviced on time and has no other issues. I’ve check the levels regularly and have never needed to add oil or coolant.

Cheers

I have the same T6 on an 18 plate. I have had less issues since I started using Shell V-Power diesel. I also periodically add Dipetane when I can’t refuel with Shell.

I bought a Carista to reset the amber light. And I often get a couple of hundred miles before the light comes on again. I only do long motorway runs. And drive around 40 miles each way to work every day.

Front EGR pipe was replaced for the first time last year. And rear one done last week as it failed the MOT for a leak.

Wondering how you have got on since you last posted? I am always considering an EGR blanked off and deleted. As the way forward…….
