Engine Failure

My 2018 T6 engine has had a monumental failure. Piston and rod out the side of the block. The van has done just shy of 55k, when I went into VW about the van I have had no support what so ever. Has any one had similar experience.... unfortunately this isn't a first for me, I have been VW loyal for some time. My golf gti had an engine failure due to a timing chain tensioner pulley where I ended up getting 50% goodwill.
The van is still on the recovery trailer but I am at my wits end where to go from here. I can replace the engine myself no hassle but the engine alone I was quoted £6.5k never mind if it needs any other bit. Fair chance that plastic filter housing will be damaged along with the cooler above....

hopefully someone can share something helpful.

cheers guys n gals

Jeez.

What a nightmare.

Sound like you need a replacement engine, or short block at least. (I'm thinking breakers with a crash damaged van)

So what's the story?

Why has it gone bang?

Was it mapped?

Serviced regularly?

Water leak?

Doubt a failed timing belt would through a rod through the block?.

So what else can you give us info and history wise?

Go any pics as well?

Especially the engine damage.

I would think it will need an engine. I have been looking at trading in the van recently too, had planned to earlier but due to the way prices and lead times had gone I put it off!
My guess is a ring or something has gone.

Breakers might be my only option unless I can get assistance from VW through goodwill etc.

I am a self employed joiner so cannot afford this to drag on. I may have to buy a van in the mean time and sort this after.

Van was serviced by VW every year until the last service. Which we carried out (my father has a garage)

No water or oil leaks prior to this.

Van is serviced on the button

Has a Revo map. just the basic one. has had this from nearly new.

I generally just cruise about in it. Very rarely if ever is the van really pushed. it's pretty poor on the motion lotion with all my tools etc in it. so I spend most of my time trying to keep the MPG up.

Seems pretty odd to hole the crankcase without an over-speeding engine.
What were the approx‘ engine rev’s at the time of failure and vehicle speed?

About 3000, I was about to overtake, felt a little hestitant so I lifted off. Then seen smoke in the mirror. Dipped the clutch and the engine revved on a little (assuming oil had got to the cylinder) and then it lunched itself. I free wheeled to the lay-by

You don't think it's was turbo failure causing and over rev to the point it threw a rod?

It just died and you coasted to a halt?

....

It would be interesting to see a VCDS scan to see what error codes we have.

Might be worth noting that engine failure normally needs a dpf flush or replacement if it's full of oil.

....

The revs didn’t really rev high enough for it to cause that. Could be turbo related tho. I think any component related failure at 55k the manufacturer should be willing to help tho.

Yeah the DPF will defo need something. Hence why I am hoping VW will come through for me.

I dipped the clutch and put it in neutral. From where the oil starts on the road to the lay-by is 0.4 of a mile. I had to record it today for the insurance.

Re engine failure at 55k miles.

100% agree with you that manufacture should offer help.

Unfortunately the VW warranty is 36months. 3years. ( Or 100k miles, whatever first)

Your same as me 2018, that makes the van 5 years old regarles of millage.

(I had factory extended warranty, and now all in warranty so have the extra cover for years 4,5,6,7)

But I can see that VW will try and reject any claim as you are two years out of warranty.

Unless you let VW have the van and pay for a vw diagnostic, then use the results to go to VW customer care and raise a complaint.

You may have some traction with this if you have proof that the van has been regularly serviced by VW at the requirements.

But you will still have to pay for the diag upfront.

But after that you may get a 50/50 good will offer... (Which would most likely be a short block and rebuild) (I've been here before, but in my case the VW dealer blew up my engine. . . . But it still took 3months to sort out - they have me a loan van while it was being sorted)

I guess we all want to know what caused it and there are a number of possibilities, but your priority is probably to get a working engine in that van in a cost effective way.
Just my opinion but I'd be very wary of using the oil pump from your existing engine on the new engine unless it can be proven to be 100% good.

Well VW estimated 12-15k to do the engine when I went in. I’m assuming that would be due to them replacing a lot of ancillaries. DPF, oil pump etc etc.
yeah I can’t afford to be without a van for any great length of time.
I’m tempted to plug my code reader in it might wait until I get it to VW.
Even if they offer 50/50 if I’m looking at 7.5 I’d still be tempted to source one from a breakers as that’s crazy money and basically means I wouldn’t be getting a new van…
26k plus vat for a van to do 55k and shit itself
I’ve a golf & polo in the drive can see them getting punted too

12-15k £. !!!!!!

Yeh, i think I'd be finding a local VAG indy and getting them to do an engine swap.

Prob 4-5k would be my expectation from previous threads on here.

7k£ for a 50/50 deal on a 5year old.panel van wouldn't be worth it.

...

Trade it in for another van could be an option. Have you asked VW for a price to take it in PX?.

....

Or sell private as a none runner and cut your losses.

Then get something else.

.....

It would be interesting to see the engine diag to see why it when pop though.

.....

Haven’t asked for a part ex as it is no. Worth a shout tho.
I can do the engine swap myself no hassle it’s just the time and hassle etc. my old man has a garage so got all the gear. Just would prefer it to be dealer assisted with a courtesy van or insurance. For obvious reasons
