Excessive white smoke from exhaust.

My 2016 T6 failed to start last week, this turned out to be the starter motor.

Whilst i had this striped down and awaiting the new starter motor, I removed and cleaned the EGR valve and replaced the glow plugs.
I fitted the new starter motor, rebuilt and added coolant.

Engine started first time and probably the best it has started, left it running for a while and was OK, took it for a drive and within about a minute
started with excessive white smoke from exhaust.

Anyone had anything similar?

Thanks.

Injesting coolant?

Has the coolant level dropped?

Smoke or steam?
How did you clean the EGR valve?

so you have an additional coolant leak to inlet flow or cylinders?

EGR Cooler?
Charge Air Cooler?
Head Gasket?
Oil cooler?
DSG oil cooler? (water cooled? not checked)

@Loz can you think of more possible locations?

Probably a leaking head gasket, get a test done on the coolant for exhaust gas presence. don’t add fresh coolant as you’lI get a negative result. I assume you have checked the oil on dipstick for emulsification.
My advice is to not drive it as it will cause further damage.
It may be that the EGR valve seal was damaged when you stripped the valve out and that it was not the leak path.
You can discount the engine oil cooler and DSG cooler as not connected to the inlet / combustion.
Be very wary of cranking the engine on the starter as you could have a hydraulic lock and damage the engine, best to turn it over by hand at the crankshaft.

Coolant levels no longer dropping since I replaced the egr and cooler, does this rule out head gasket? And maybe coolant in combustion or cylinder from when it was leaking?

Dipstick and filler cap has no sign of emulsification

maybe residue in the exhaust system . .

a good motorway run getting engine and exhaust fully up to temp for a while may help?

I’m not an expert on SCR but I’ve read that coolant can wreck the sensors

Did you get this issue sorted?? Currently have same issue after new turbo install. No white smoke on start up or idle but as soon as engaged second gear, seems to misfire or junk and then white smoke start coming out of exhaust. Seems like a valve opens up and bam. Any ideas?? T5 transporter BPC 2.5L.

Did you ever resolve this one?
