External Storage Ideas

Now we have fitted bigger alloys the spare is the incorrect size. I’ve taken the spare off and got a puncture repair kit instead.

Has anyone ever used the spare wheel space for storage or anything else? Or is there a box available to utilise the space?

Just a thought but probably a rubbish one

I believe they do an external gas tank that fits where a spare wheel would be. So, in theory at least, you could free-up internal storage space by replacing an onboard gas locker - though it does seem a very circuitous and expensive approach to gaining a small amount of extra storage. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

True. I’ve seen that you can get a 68l water tank as well. Might be an idea instead of the bottle we have in the back to free up more space inside

I have bigger 20inch alloys on my t6 but I've kept my old spare as I was told although the size is different it can still be used as a spare in emergencies have I been told right or misinformed best use of storage for spare wheel space is surely a spare wheel

Provided you don't have 4-motion, I think you'll be okay using the original spare in an emergency.

When I put the spare next to my alloy one because the spare tyre has a higher wall there's not much in it hopefully it'll be OK

Space saver spare wheels (MX5, Honda Jazz, Fiat 500) are remarkably different in size, hence the speed restriction when in use. As a 'get me home' I think a standard spare wheel under the van is probably the best use of that space, it's a pretty grubby area of any vehicle to use for much else.

I would think twice before dispensing with your spare, regardless of its size. There are some punctures that a repair/sealant kit will not be able to fix. I discovered this, albeit in a car, whilst on holiday in Ireland last summer. A piece of metal tore a 4" hole in my tyre. I went to the boot to fetch the spare, only to find a rather inadequate foam/pump kit. Many hours, phone calls and garage quotes later I was back on the road again, but £300 worse off.

On a similar theme - I have RR 20" rims and am going to do a big brake upgrade...... If I bought a 20" RR space saver from eBay does anyone know if it will fit in the original storage space?

Thanx as always for any help or advise!

On a similar subject to the above, thought I'd ask for any advice here rather than start a new thread. I've got a T32 4 Motion panel van that am converting, new swamper tyres fitted and am going to be mounting the new spare same size as the new tyres on the rear on a bike rack mount (larger than the factory supplied one which currently lives underneath). I'd like to utilise the under van storage where the spare was, accessing underneath is quite easy given that the van sits quite high, and I am wondering if anyone knows of a off the shelf watertight wheel sized storage box, or a company who may be able to make me a bespoke one? Thinking for storage of lightly used kit like beach towels and/ or wetsuits etc. kayak type gear port etc so it keeps dry.

No way I’d leave home without a spare wheel, too many places without mobile signal.

Agree 100% I'd always have a spare with me - currently have it inside the van, longer term mine will be on the outside of the van at the rear on a rack, i'm talking about utilising the space where the spare was under the rear, the new spare is too large to fit where the spare was previously located.

A member recently posted that they have an issue filling the tank as it looks like the installer didn’t fit an effective vent, an easy fix.
