Golf R Estate

Any Golf R Estate owners here? Current or former. Any common issues that are Golf R specific? I've had a few Golfs and most recently a 2019 7.5 GTi

Considering one for commuting, family duties and small dog.

Budget would be 90-100k mileage on a 2016

Thanks,

Lee

My better half has one which I drive occasionally , ours has been great ...bought 2nd hand, with 20k on the clock and now at 60k with no issues 2018 model, tyres regularly! and brakes buts thats been it. Its quick and practical. Easy to service yourself as well (probably cursed it now!)....only minor has been the speeding points she keeps racking up

On my 2nd golf r now! Both from new so can’t comment on the 2nd hand aspect but great cars no issues. I like them because there understated and not all up in your face like other fast hatch’s.Thirsty tho

They are pretty billet proof. I’ve had two R’s and currently run a 480ps stage 3 TCR so same engine - no issues tuned for 32k miles.

Obviously a good history etc needs to be checked.

Make sure the box and rear diff are serviced and ask for a pic. As the stealer has a knack of charging and not doing it( happened to a few people i know). Also if it's a manual the slave are prone for going. And the silt bag needs removing from the header. Apart from that they are mint.

Depending on age, mileage, history etc cam chains, cam actuators, camshafts themselves, plastic thermostat housing/water pump and union.

Bear in mind a lot have been driven hard and modified and not always with good components, also a lot of people have wanted them over the years, get them but then cant really afford to run /maintain them properly so skimp on stuff but are happy because it looks shiny sitting on their driveway!!

I've just bought one recently. I've had a lot of different VAG stuff and fastish cars and super impressed by all round ability of it. Mines is a 2018, basic car with no DCC etc. Its does everything I need it to so can see it staying for a while. Only minor gripe is the suspension is a little lacking when pushing on bumpy roads but mine is on 67k so probably needs refreshed.
As you say fairly understated and the estate tend not to be thrashed or chavved up. They are selling quickly though so if you find one then go for it.
