[Guide] Converting sliding-door blinds to black-out

i said i'd get back on how I managed this:

having taken the door card out, strip out the VW blind from the door card... remove the 6 torx screw and blind mechanism lift off the door card

with the blind mechanism on the bench:

dismatle the roller mechanism -
extend the blind and pull off one of the plastic end caps, then slide out the blind from the end 'bar', allow the blind to wind fully into the housing
find the end caps unscrewing the 2 small retaining screws
carefully remove the end cap - one end is just a pin to hold the roller, the other has the rewind spring hooked to it and will want to spin- let it unwind
i found it best to remove rewind spring first
unhook the spring from the end cap
remove blind out of housing

Here we may differ on what we want. Eiether add to exisyting mesh or replace existing
i decidded as the black out cloth was v thin and light i would keep mesh and add cloth to outer face
The principle is the same if replacing, - i woudl suggest carefully mark the straight edge on the roller and remove mesh from the roller and cut the cloth v accurately so it is straight and square

as i was adding to mesh i opened up the blind and glued blackout cloth to mesh and roller - being v careful to stick mesh to blackout cloth
then cut the black out cloth to size, then glued the black out cloth to roller, then over the opening bar end which has a thin wire to hold it in the end bar

allow the glue to set

reassembly:
wind blind tightly onto roller
slide roller into housing and the fiddly bit is getting the opening edge/wire of the blind out through the opening slot (making sure it is winding/unwinding the correct rotation)
slide the end bar onto the edge - some Silone spray helps
replace the opening bar the end cap

replace the passive end cap / pivot of the mechanisim

make up a hook and looking into roller pick it up and pull out the spring
hook it onto the active end/pivot

holding the roller in place wind the spring anticlockwise by rotating the end cap - at least 35-40 rotations
lock end cap and test by pulling blind out and in ; if you need more force to fully rewind- add more rotations on the spring
it may take a few adjustments to get right

i needed quite a few extra due to overall slighly thicker materail

reassmble back into the door

Nice write up having had to rewind a blind and put it under tension to make it work once, it was a lot of trial and error on my part at the time. LOL.
