[Guide] Tailgate Dash Cam install

ok so I didn’t find much help online with fitting this into my VW and thought I would share - the guy who had it before me had a rear facing camera drilled through the badge which was letting in water- so after a lot of research I decided on the Auto Vox X2 because:

• Has a rear camera
• Looks like a mirror
• Continuously provides rear view while driving
• Records both feeds at the same time

I first located the rear camera just above the license plate, filled in the old camera hole (awaiting stickers to cover this on eBay), and routed the cable through the tailgate where existing wires are then through the rubber tube and down the left side of the van then through into the cab.

I spliced the rear sensor also into the rear light (green and black wire) which was also situated in the cable bundle that runs down the length of the van.

It is simple enough to remove the side passenger trims using a trim tool (these things are awesome) and wired the front dash cam into the Live with Ignition 1.5a. (The rear cam feeds directly into the forward dash cam).

Final thoughts:

• Easy to install except for wiring through tailgate
• Great resolution on front, not as clear on reverse
• Great feature for the price

Update - I decided to buy a new rear badge to replace the one the previous owner had fitted a rear camera through - got it off to find rust where he hadn’t sealed the camera!

So decided to sand down to metal, spray and seal with body filler!

What is it with that stupid rear badge seal! They always break when you try and remove them.

I'm still waiting for someone to do the new Golf rear camera mod, where the VW badge automatically lifts to expose the rear camera when you reverse.
Now that is cool

How clear is the rear camera view? Is it good enough to use just like a standard rear view mirror when driving?

It’s clear enough to see reg plate and what’s around you. It not as clear as an actual mirror - the only big bear I have with it is I cannot see how close the end of my van is to whatever I am reversing to.

You can do it you just need to make a hole in the tailgate to flush the badge into so it can pivot/rotate

I used a Runcam Swift 2 inset in the VW badge with the 130 degree lens, it feeds in to an ATOTO A6 head unit on the FCAM input so I can turn it on and use it as a rear view camera whilst driving.
I have an ATOTO camera mounted above the number plate pointing downwards at about 45 degrees connected to the reversing camera input on the head unit that comes on when I select reverse.

I drilled a hole through from the front side of the badge, very carefully as the black part is very brittle, used a diamond drill bit to get the right size, then from the rear, through the metalwork of the door behind the badge, using a die grinder to make the rear hole large enough to take the camera and lens without making the hole in the badge any larger, stuck the camera into place from the inside, sealing the hole as it did. Cables run through the door link along the van at roof level and down the passenger A pillar and in to the head unit, power for the cameras is on with the ignition from a spare fuse location.
