Halfords EFB096 Starter battery

Hi, my starter battery appears goosed after a long period of inactivity. Needed jumping before the CTEK would recognise it and after nearly 24 hours charging/reconditioning it started but after driving a short while the battery light came on and it now won’t restart. It’s a Varta in it but can I replace it with this one as suggested by Halfords online system and I can get today. I’ll post photo of the Varta specs too. I’m planning on switching them over myself but realise I need someone with VCDS software to program it in. Will it drive without programming to get it somewhere that can do this for me or will they need to come to me? Thanks in advance

Thanks for that Dellmassive, at a quick glance it looks as though a like for like swap might be the easier option, negating the need for VCDS malarkey. Thanks.

Any new battery needs coding in, regardless of the make or model.

To tell the van to reset the SOH and SOC parameters.

State of health.

State of charge.

I got a ‘like for like’ Varta battery & switched them over. Took it down to a VW specialist who coded it for me this morning. The stop/start function is still inactive and the battery light came on after a few miles suggesting it’s not being charged. Does it take a few cycles before the coding takes effect? Many thanks

No coding is instant.

The van may varify the battery is good before stop start kicks in ...... Over about 10 key cycles.

But if the battery light is on, then you have a problem.

Check the Alternator belt.

Check the battery connections.

If all's well you may have a Alternator LIN bus wire fault....

Did the VW guy scan for codes?


Post some pics of the starter battery and connectors.

Did you connect the ctek charger direct to the battery with all connectors still connected?

@Dellmassive thanks, the VW guy simply coded the battery while I waited as a drop in. When I tried to jump start the old battery there was smoke from the negative terminal so I suspect I’ve damaged something relating to the alternator.

@T6Gary thank you, yes when I attached the CTEK charger to the old battery all the connectors were still connected.
