Headlights on or not?

My wife asked a simple question today - with light switch in auto, on a murky misty morning but not dark enough to see the headlamp beam, how do you know you are not just on DRLs? She did the sensible thing and put the light switch to manual headlamps but I couldn't give a satisfactory answer - ours is a shuttle with factory auto lights - do some models have a lights on indicator or can something be retro fitted?

The green headlamp switch will illuminate on the switch itself, when on the Auto position.
Also, if you click on high beam, it will show blue in the cluster. It won't, if the lamps aren't on

Fog is usually the downfall of Auto lights (& drivers) so good on her for even thinking about it!

Having a lowly Startline I always have to switch them on myself!

Don’t the symbols on the switch light up to show what’s on? They do on my Passat with auto lights.

Very difficult to see the switch when your driving, let alone if there's a light on - will try and check that tho by throwing something over the sensor - would be much better if there was a headlamp warning light on the dash like there is on my Audi
