Interior lighting not working on unlock

Hi all,

Just received my 2018 T6 and noticed that when I unlocked the vehicle none of the interior lights come on, same when I open the doors? Iv tried the centre switch in all position but all this does is keep the lights on or off permanently. Also should the rear spot lights come on when when unlocking?

Lights work fine when manually switched

Thanks of any help

From your description of "rear spots" is this a conversion?

Conversions vary as there's many ways to arrange things but in general the rear lights will work from the leisure battery (so they don't time out) and will not be triggered by doors.

I'd expect the front lights to still be fine though. There should be 3 positions (always on, on with doors open, always off) if you find that it's (always on, always on, always off) so still the three positions I'd investigate if the door switches are working correctly, though if one wasn't I'd expect there to be a door open warning on the dash as well?

If it's actually (always on, always off, always off) you may find whoever did the conversion removed the wiring to the door switch signal so the lights didn't come on and use the starter battery while camping.

Thanks for the reply! Strangely enough they have started to work today thankfully.

The van isn’t converted as such but I think it has had some work done. My business partner purchased it on a whim as my leased vehicle was due to go back. neither of us know much about transporters to be honest. Iv taken it off his hands as Iv always fancied one but finding issues here and there.

It’s a 2018 2.0 4 motion Dsg highline kombi , it has a carpeted ceiling with spot lights and carpeted side panels etc. I’m guessing that’s not standard?

If you can get it scanned for fault codes mine has a strange fault code with interior lights short to ground which then clears itself randomly could be something like that

It's not factory standard no, though it's a very common thing for folks to do as it makes the Kombi a practical van in the week but comfortable enough to camp in if needed, especially if you get one of the sleeping type pods.

It all depends on how the rear spots have been fitted. If it's just a basic "make the van smarter" lining then it's likely the just replaced the cargo area lights and they should work "as standard" so they will time out after about 20 mins. If you don't have a second battery under a front seat that's probably the way it's been done.

Investing in a VW aware OBD2 system like Carista or OBDEleven is probably a wise move to see what faults are being logged in the van, it's an unfortunate fact of life with modern vehicles...
