Intermittent power steering failure

I have read every post but I cannot find anybody describing the same problems I am having. Hopefully, someone will have some advice for me.

The van is a 2016 T6 Euro5 T32 LWB 4Motion Startline 140 manual CAAC.

I had the cambelt, water pump and alternator changed on the van by a local garage. The alternator is a higher output unit which is the reason for the change. A new tensioner and aux belt were also installed. The power steering pump had to be moved to fit the alternator.

When I picked up the van the steering felt a little lighter than before. The steering worked fine across the full range and there were no noises.

The next day I went out and had to turn around and turned the steering to full lock and there was a squeal from the power steering pump, this was not like a belt squeal it was higher pitched. After the squeal, the steering would only turn 180 degrees and then would lock. If I released the pressure on the wheel for a few seconds the wheel would then move another quarter turn. Doing this I can turn the wheel from lock to lock.

I took the van back to the garage and they tried to work out what was happening. Everything was checked, the reservoir was removed and it was cleaned, there was no debris in the filter. All the pipes were checked. The whole system was drained and refilled with new fluid. This cleared the fault and the steering was back to normal and not light anymore. No fault was found.

Today I used the van and once again had to go on to full lock to turn around. I heard the same squeal and the steering failed again. Once again the steering could only be turned 90 degrees in either direction and then it would lock. Later I started the van and it was fine again.

I am going to change the power steering pump as the squeal seems to happen before the failure.

Any thoughts?

Have you checked what's physically happening with the steering when the locking happens and if there is anything actually obstructing the steering at that point?

I ask as I tried to trace an odd juddering and noise from the power steering on a SAAB 9000 years ago before taking it to the dealer. After a short roadtest the mechanic agreed, checked the drivers side front as that's where all the noise was but then also checked the other side (which for some reason I never thought to do) and found a pair of vice grips on the steering track rod arm from when I had had a wheel alignment done 2 weeks earlier...

I spoke to a power steering specialist and he thinks it may be air in the system. I am going to try doing a vacuum bleed today and see if that helps.
