Is 18mm Kitchen Carcass Suitable?

Hi, I need to make a custom kitchen cupboard due to going the kombi route. I need a unit over the rear wheel arch. I’m going to attempt this myself and I have lots of 18mm kitchen carcass left from our house kitchen. It’s the Howdens grey oak.

Is there any major reason why this couldn’t be used? I understand it will be heavier than 15mm but it’s only for the one unit.

Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

You can use what you like as long as you can deal with the weight of it and prevent the damp from seeping into it.
Ours is all made from painted mdf , been in nearly 10 years , the odd scuff from use but other than that all good

Great thanks, I was just worried I was missing something. I’ll use it then and get some knock on trim which should help seal the edges from damp. Is your worktop also mdf? Didn’t know if I needed something like a kitchen worktop if being used for prepping food or making drinks? Thanks

Yes our worktop is mdf also again painted and sealed with yacht varnish and our table is a ply off cut painted and varnished the same.
The intention was to make it all cheaply and prove it worked for us first before taking it all apart again and using it a
as a template for a lightweight ply version.....but never happened.
At a guess your kitchen carcase will be made of melamine coated chipboard so the first things I'd be thinking about are stopping it getting damp and the strength of how you intend to fix it to the van .
Obviously you'll need something else for your worktop as the coated paper facing isn't durable enough for that job.

@Phil1 Have a read up first on 18mm chipboard weights compared to 18mm ply they reckon double the weight which is probably why converters use 15mm ply plus ply is better for getting secure fixings into
people who have made units out of kitchen carcasses will probably say their just as good but kitchen units are made from cheap materials designed to be installed in a dry static environment i.e a house
