Looking to buy and need advice

On the other hand, I’ve had automatic cars all my life. Currently I have a manual T6.1 and I’m happy with the manual.

Yeah but that will wear off eventually.
I had autos for years but I borrowed the Missus car (manual) a few years back and thought “ooh, I’m quite enjoying this changing gear thing” so I leased a manual car. After about 6 months I couldn’t wait to get back in an auto.

We have 2 autos and 3 manuals at the moment. I can quite happily jump from one to another, but still much prefer the autos.

I drive manuals in work so it really doesn’t bother me…. I don’t see all the fuss especially in a van.
I’ve had Audi RS3 and M5 and obviously auto is a must in a fast car, but when your bimbling about in a van, I really don’t think it makes much difference in my opinion.

@yipyip67 what is the additional cost?
It’s a personal choice, is it affordable, do you really dislike manual and would it really make a difference?

Thing I would add is resale values for autos seem to be a lot higher, so maybe something to think about when eventually selling.

If you go for a model with higher torque you will be changing gear far less often than one of the lower powered models.
I’ve got a fully converted 180ps (400Nm) which will pull from tickover RPM in 6th when rolling on the flat, not saying that’s good driving practice but the torque makes them pretty easy to drive.

Love my auto , much easier especially if you intend on travelling lots

Hi
I’m new to this forum, so many different sections and so many threads and advice.
I’m looking on buying a vw t6 camper and have been mooching for quite some time but so many companies out there.
Iv seen several nice vans and always check out the reviews but it’s a lot of money to spend so just want to make sure I purchase from the right people.
Has anyone heard or brought from Custom design campervans Ltd based in Atherstone?
They have a few campers I like the look of and seem very reasonable priced. Their reviews seem great and looks as though their aftercare is outstanding. Iv visited the farm and the lads there seem very genuine and helpful so thinking I might just bite the bullet and purchase from here, but thought it was worth asking on the forum if anyone has either used or brought from this company for some reassurance.
Thanks guys look forward to any comments x

Hi and welcome. Have you tried searching the forum for the phrase "custom design campervans"? I'd guess someone will have used them or at least have an opinion on them.

Not heard of or used then myself, but the phrase "very reasonably priced" pricked my ears - whilst it's great to get a bargain, that often comes at the expense of the conversion being built on top of a low-spec van. There's nothing wrong with low-spec vans per se, just as long as you're buying one knowingly and you understand that there are some upgrades that are either very difficult (and/or expensive) or simply impossible to apply if you subsequently decide you can't live without them (e.g. Air Con).

I'm not trying to put you off the vans you've seen - just do your homework and ensure that you're comparing apples with apples and that you're happy with the spec being offered.

I'd also advise looking at the number of threads on leisure electrics. Depending on what you want to use the van for this can make or break your enjoyment of the van yet it's an area that most folks will not ask about or check (at least on the first camper!) but is an area that it's easy to cut corners on and the compromises only become apparent a season or two later.

There's places where basic electrics work, but those are mostly for day vans and short weekend summer breaks.

On a conversion done now on a modern base van there is little reason not to fit a DC-DC charger and lithium system yet many still are to save a few hundred pounds and end up with basic limited all in one systems using split charge relays and AGM batteries.

There is some argument that if it's the factory fitted basic split charge relay and AGM that's not so bad, as it hasn't cost the converter any time or effort, so long as that is reflected in the final price.

Don't be distracted by fancy control panels, ensure that the basic electrics are sound, make sure you know what type it is, that you've seen the install and it doesn't take removing half the van to get to, and the equipment is from a well regarded supplier and not, as some times happens, an unbranded maintenance charger or similar that will quickly age the leisure battery but not so quickly it would be a warranty issue.
