Major fright on stall.....

I was on a roundabout and put the T6 into the wrong gear (it's new and I'm still getting used to it)
I stalled the van and the steering lock went on straight away whilst the van was still moving!!!
Is this right? I thought if the key was in the ignition the steering lock would no go on..... I very nearly hit a lampost while trying to break and turn the ignition off and back on to restrain and free off the lock............

That sounds like hell mate, you did well to not end up hurt by the sound of it. A steering lock should not engage while key is in ignition. Major design floor thats a disaster waiting to happen.

Are you sure it was the steering lock? The steering is ridiculously heavy without power assistance.
Also when you dip the clutch after stalling it should restart straight away by itself

Can only have been heavy steering, not the steering lock. If it was the steering lock then leave the van where it is and don't drive it....

Oh, maybe it was heavy steering then, but I could not turn the wheel at all, I did dip the clutch but it didn't start, I had the switch off the ignition and then back on again to restart - on a very large and busy roundabout it was not fun.....

Happened to me once in a 6 speed manual Tiguan, 1-3-5 are very close together, selected 3rd by mistake, it stalled, rolled forward enough to block the roundabout, followed by the auto brake engaging, just a as panda car was entering the roundabout, tres embarrassing, swore never to have a 6 speed manual again..

Sounds like you lost the power assistance provided by the running engine.
Unassisted steering on a T6 is a heavy as hell. As has been said, just depressing the clutch should restart if autostop is activated.

unfortunately it is not a problem with the blockbuster but damn engine software ..... in release and low speed the engine tends to turn off, just by pressing the clutch it re-engages ... it's criminal all this especially if you're on a roundabout or on a tight curve ... !!!

Start stop is weird on VW's - on every other car I have had you can still turn the steering wheel when it was engaged.

Been caught out a few times, sometimes it starts on pressing the clutch down other times. Ignition off and restart..

Ditto with mine, sometimes it restarts and other times I'm left frantically trying to restart by turning off the key fully and then as you know back on again. sometimes vehicle stops with an almighty bang and shudder which worries me if it may cause further damage. These vehicles are not cheap and Vw really need to sort these issues out!

It's an electronic steering rack so if you stall you pretty much have no steering at all as you're trying to turn an electric motor against magnets as you're not directly connected to the steering rack.
At least you would have some hydraulic pressure on a convention steering rack to be able to move.

Today at lights stop start kicked in, I turned the steering wheel with the force of 10 bears and stop start disengaged. Feeling very manly at this point I tried it again at the next set of lights - I think I have dislocated my wrists.

Had similar on wrong gear selection.....doesn't half focus the mind on avoiding chaos on the road!!!

Really? Steer by wire? With Volkswagen cost-cutting engineering? It would be safer to ride pillion with Stevie Wonder

There must be a direct linkage betwen the tack and the steering column. Anything else would be lethal. I tried my other non-vw van out and the steering works perfectly when it is atopped as a result of stop-start. I think it is hybrid with an electric pump driving a hydraulic rack. I used to stall my VW all the time until I had it remapped and the steering was like frozen treacle.
