MFD reset issue

Hi everyone,

Since the beginning of last year, I’ve owned a T6 (2018 model year). It’s a Transporter with fairly basic equipment. From the very start, I’ve had an issue where the multifunction display occasionally resets itself to show the outside temperature. This happens sporadically—not while driving, but when the car is parked.

Last summer, I retrofitted the extended multifunction display + cruise control. However, the original issue persists and has become even more annoying. Every time the display resets to the outside temperature, all stored values, such as average fuel consumption, driving time, etc., are wiped. Unfortunately, this happens very inconsistently—sometimes it won’t occur for 1-2 weeks, and other times it happens multiple times in a single week.

I’ve already disconnected the battery multiple times (even left it unplugged overnight), but the issue remains.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Instrument cluster part number: 7E0 920 861 A
Hardware version: H02
Software version: 2030
Code: 150B010300

First of all welcome to the forum :)

I would suggest to replace your fuse SC22(5A).
While replacing please check very carefully whenever your fuse socket/holder contacts don't have any signs of being burnt/overheated or corroded. Also check if these contacts are not loose.

If this doesn't fix the problem you need to go slightly deeper and I would suggest to bringing a temporary supply to your Instrument Cluster
(PIN 32 -> IC permanent supply) from any other source(fused!).

Okay, thank you very much for your response. I’ve checked the fuses and replaced the SC22 just to be safe.

Since this issue only occurs occasionally, it’s difficult to reroute the power supply for the instrument cluster to a different source. The instrument cluster itself works perfectly fine, except for the fact that it randomly resets the stored display values from time to time

If the old cluster and new cluster behaved the same then the issue has to be supply/wiring related
Im with @Robert and think the permanent supply to the cluster has to be the first port of call, the only other possibility could be a flat battery or at least low voltage maybe while cranking that is dipping low enough to reset the clocks, I think it’s unlikely to be a failing battery as the issue has been around for so long if that was the issue it probably would have fallen over by now

Okay, I could give the permanent power supply a try. But wouldn’t that mean the instrument cluster could stay on continuously for several days or weeks, or did I misunderstand something? Or should a relay be added in this case? I have a second battery under the driver’s seat that I could use for this.

Instrument Cluster has permanent supply (Terminal 30) and also ignition switched supply (Terminal 15).
So I am suggesting to run a completely new wire from any easy access location and bring it directly to your Instrument Cluster PIN 32.
Ahhh, now I got it. I’ll give it a try, thanks!
I’ll see when I can manage to lay the new cable and will get back to you.
