My coolant woes all started in the September of 24. My first hint that the coolant level was low was the check coolant light on the dash coming on. I checked the coolant and sure enough, it was around minimum. The coolant looked a little brown and had some very small brown flakes but it’s a 2017 T6 that’s done 140,000 miles, so I topped it up and thought nothing more of it. Then a week goes by and another check coolant light comes on. Again, I check my coolant level. Yet again, low. So I did some more investigating and found the hose at the bottom of the reservoir a little loose and refitted it and filled her back up. Half a year goes by with no more issues.
Recently I’ve noticed my automatic DSG gearbox being a little rough on the 2nd and 3rd gear changes. Like the engine struggles when the gear changed almost like the very beginning of a stall. I did my own DSG service last April so this is a little worrying.
This morning my check coolant light came on again. So I go and check the coolant and some rascal has swapped my coolant for chocolate milkshake. I also checked the dip stick and found pretty average looking oil but the level has risen. I did my oil change October 2024 and remember I only filled the oil to 1/2 or maximum 3/4 but now it reads just over max. I’m booked in the garage on Monday.
I’ll add that other than the gear changes mentioned above, the van has ran smooth. Coolant and oil temp reads around 90C and no smoke.
So, any guesses what this could be? Easy guess is head gasket but interested to hear some other reasonable suggestions while I wait for Monday to come. Also interested to know if the gear change thing could relate to poor engine performance due to bad coolant? Or is it a straight up clutch pack replacement even though it’s only 2nd and 3rd struggling?
Thanks in advance for any advice!
