I'd been taught to look over my shoulder in addition to checking the mirrors when changing lane. Obviously in a panel Van you can't do that and in a combi by the time you've done that you could be running into the vehicle in front of you.
So, I've adopted the strategy below. This works perfectly for the off side but still leaves a blind spot on the near side.
