Morning all.

I'm looking to get a spare set of wheels for my 17 plate Caravelle to run winter tyres so that I can keep the alloys out of the winter grime.

I know there is much debate about the utility of winter tyres for the UK climate, however I live in Inverness and having replaced a Subaru Outback shod with winter tyres (which would go anywhere) I'd quite like to have a similar level of sure-footedness with the Caravelle.

The local VW dealer is quoting an eye-watering £998.56 for a set of 17inch steel wheels and General Grabber tyres. (£455.28 for the wheels alone.) I prefer the look of the 17inch steel rims to the 16inch.

So, to my point. Has any one on here used Mr Winter Wheels? They are selling the 17 inch steel wheels "from German manufacturer Kronprinz and are produced exactly to OEM specification" for £286 a set.

Seems like a go0d price. Is there a catch?

Many thanks in advance for your comments and thoughts

Not used them for this van but a previous touareg....good company.
Try Openio for your GG AT3s
I'm a big fan of the AT3s...mud,snow, they haven't stopped me getting anywhere in about 200k since I started using them. 5th set and wouldn't change now.

We had Ovation winter tyres on wifes fabia and they were great even when just cold and wet. So much more sure footed. Not sure they do sizes for transporters.

My local indy said cheaper winter tyres were generally OK - I was sceptical but was proved wrong.

I’d be inclined to get a set of rims off ebay (if you can find locally) and source tyres via a local indy.

Thanks for the feedback.

@Fluff34567 - The Generals were what the local VW dealer was offering. Looked them up on line and they don't get particularly good reviews.

I'm now looking at getting the wheels through MyTyres with Maxxis Vansmart Snow WL2 tyres in 215/60 R17 109/107 which is the exact same size as they tyre info plate inside the drivers door.

£250 less than the price quoted from the local VW dealer.

That's pretty much what my mate said, he had generals and "OKish" but twitchy when there was snow on the motorway etc.

Reviews are not so great for the maxxis though.

If you dropped to 16’s and 205/65 you could prob do for < 400 with 2nd hand rims of which there are lots on ebay.

I was going to put winters on my Superb before I sold it and the recommended size was 1” smaller diameter and 10mm smaller width.
