Newbie - the journey begins..

Hi all,
Just joined the forum today as we are about to embark upon purchasing and kitting out a T6 or T6.1 (once we can find one that is..).

We have decided to take the plunge after hiring a SWB T6.1 from a local campervan hire company where we took a 4 day trip around Wales, this went well and gave us a good idea of what we would want from a van.

So we are now on the hunt for a LWB T6 or 6.1 150ps van ideally with DSG and a tailgate, we are looking around the usual places such as ebay/FB marketplace and the FB forums and hoping one comes along that fits the bill soon. After that I intend to fit it out by myself and will be an interesting departure from modifying early watercooled VW's which has been my main moneypit for the last 10 years!

Good luck finding your van, seriously you’re going to need it!
If you’re set on DSG (which all come with the 150bhp btw) and Tailgate then your best bet is probably an ex-RAC van. They do a bit of towing so do have extra wear and tear and the electrics are heavily modified. But the diagrams are on the forum and they are looked after vans. If you’ve got a mate in the motor trade you could snag a bargain in the auctions, obviously there’s always a risk worth an auction but as mentioned, RAC vans are typically well looked after.
I very nearly bought one but the Mrs didn’t like the orange…

You’ve done the right thing already though by hiring one so you know what you do/don’t need.

Welcome and good luck hunting. Have a look on Autotrader as there are numerous on there that meet your requirements. And hopefully your budget!

Not sure if this extends to RAC vans, but I recently asked an AA patrolman whether it was true that their vans were maintained to a very high standard. He told me that, historically,, that would have been true, but that he couldn't recommend ex-patrol vans nowadays due to the servicing being outsourced to a third party and cost-savings now being the primary consideration when it came to their maintenance.
