Non VW EGR part reported as a problem

My van is in limp mode, no dash warning lights. Diagnostics said needed new EGR. I had an aftermarket, non VW, EGR fitted however the diagnostics have stated the EGR still needs replacing, and it is still in limp mode. Again no warning lights. Different garage did second diagnostics. The second garage has stated non VW parts often do not work. Is this true? I have a 2016 T6.

My view is if the non VW parts didn’t work they wouldn’t be in business very long. There is no ground breaking technology in an EGR unit, VW don’t manufacture it, it is a bought in item from Pierburg or other manufacturers.
