Not convinced electric and gas are done well

Hi, I recently bought a camper conversion t6. Wish I had read some forums first and did my research. However probably overpaid for the van. But now I have won’t convinced the electric and gas have been done, ie wires loose into back of unit no gas locker etc. Leisure battery not in box. Anyone know someone in the south west who can firstly check all and put right. Thanks

We redo many camper van installs, doing one right now, which was done by a big conversion company ,

Drop us a pm, with pictures or call us to discuss

Welcome @Wilf1664 even if not under the best circumstances! On the upside you'll find the forum folk here are a wealth of advice and support.

Absolut5 would have been my first recommendation, especially given the location, a bit further along the coast there is also Bognor Motors; both well recommended and active forum supporters.

Want to put some pics up before you go spending dosh? It might not be all doom and gloom?

But gas bottle not in a locker is illegal I think? Or against the regs anyway. But it doesnt have to be metal, just an "enclosure" with a vent.

I'm a long way from an expert on this stuff but when I looked into it prior to buying our van 5 years ago, I was advised that there were no actual regulations governing stuff like gas installations in camper vans but that any responsible / reputable / sensible converter would adhere to best practice when it came to any safety critical kit - that includes the electrical system and installation of a fixed gas locker with a drop out at the bottom going out of the van. I suspect that most motor home dealers can do a habitation check which should look at gas and electrical installations (it will cost though!). Unless I missed it, you didn't say whether you bought from a dealer or privately and that would dictate how much, if any comeback you might have if things are wrong.

As you say, no actual legislation but industry NCC accreditation covers all this. That's why it took me so long to find a van - there aren't that many NCC approved converters.

Outside of that it's finger-in-the-breeze as to how diligently an installation has been fitted, or how thorough and qualified anyone checking their work may or may not be.

When I did mine I found the regs in relation to LPG installations in motorhomes.
It covered things like drop out vent locations, both relating to each gas pipe joint location and proximity to external heat sources-so should be I think 30cm from exhaust.
Also copper pipe from any fixed gas appliance to a bulkhead regulator and then a pigtail to the gas bottle. Max length of pigtail also was specified.
There was other stuff too.
I got my mate who was gas safe registered to fit all the bits I gave him after showing him the regs.
I think there’s also a different accredition for lpg instead of gas safe, but I’m happier with mine than if I’d done it myself.

Interestingly many years ago Calor Gas published their safe practice guidelines for boat and caravan DIY installs. Pity I didn't keep a copy of that. I think that there are still no regulations for DIY but as soon as mention of for sale or hire it becomes necessary to follow regulations that were drawn up for businesses.
Of course if you follow the regulations you have less chance of becoming a Darwin Award contender. :)
