Opinions wanted on purchase of T6 Kombi Purchase

Hi, I've just joined the T6 Forum after reading many post over the past few weeks (there's so much useful information!).

I'm looking to purchase my first van (I currently have a tiny VW Polo so it's a bit of change but I'm 40 this year so it's time!) and would like to feedback on a van/type that I'm looking to get.

I'm useless with practical things like fixing things and installing things (rely on youtube and hubby isn't any better!) so need to be realistic, I'm not looking to convert a van, just fit some kind of box/fold down bed over the folding seats that my 8 yr old and I can sleep on during Camp Bestival and if we do a family holiday the hubby would probably rather sleep in a tent whilst I sleep in the van with the kids!

My requirements are isofix seats (for two kids under 9yrs old), mileage under 80k, Euro 6 as I live in Bath and there's low emission zone! Hubby would prefer a captain seat at the font but I can't find that within my budget. I will be spending all the money I have buying a basic van (if it breaks anytime soon then I'm screwed!) My budget is under £20k.

I've found a couple of vans but I'm thinking of buying a 2017 T6 Kombi Day Van SWB (T30 TDI P/V STARTLINE BMT) 2.0TDI 102PS-B - I know it's a lower power model but this also means cheaper vehicle! 6 seater with 3 fold down seats in the back.

The seller seems to buy vans, add insulation, campsite hook-up, rcd consumer unit, blackout curtains and flush led ceiling lights and then sell them on.

It has a full service history (which I've not seen yet but will hopefully when I look at the van at the weekend), 58k mileage and the MOT was done today with no advisories. I don't know if the van has had extras added, possible 'business pack'(?) as it has air con and rear parking sensors. Seller mentioned DAB/CD player, bluetooth and electric windows and mirrors.

From the gov website it looks like the brake disks, brake pads and pully squeaking problem were resolved/replaced in June 2024 and a new timing belt recently. There's no mention of any significant replacements or work done the the engine - should I be relieved or worried that there's no mention of things like clutch, flywheel etc? Are they likely to go soon with the age/mileage?

Does this sound like a good van/good deal? If so what should I keep an eye out for when I go to collect it next weekend (is there a checklist online I can use?!) The seller is asking for £19.5k but will accept ONO - what would be an acceptable offer?

If this doesn't sound like a good deal, what would you buy with my requirements (isofix, insulated,Euro6,under 80k mileage, within a few hours drive of Bath) for under £20k?

Thanks for any advice/feedback.

ps. I have just test driven a 2020 LWB which was lovely, but a £4k over my budget and I don't think I can offer £4k less to the seller without taking the mic, it would also be a bit difficult for me to park.

pps. Van insurance - what do I need to list as a modification (all of this: insulation, campsite hook-up, rcd consumer unit, blackout curtains, flush led ceiling lights or just the electrical items?)

dragonboatgirl, Hi and welcome to you and your family.

If you do not bargain you may not receive any discount so nothing ventured nothing gained. I am sure that you will receive help and advice from the very knowledgable people on this forum.

There is a new member who has recently joined on this forum who has built himself a removable camping interior he is a Professional Cabinet maker and he was asking just the other day if anyone might be interested in his idea and he could build it for them. Perhaps it is not for you but it sounds to me that it might be just the thing for you. One puts it in the Van and can remove it after use. Ther is a thread about him.

The van looks ok just be sure to check all paperwork etc is there anyone mechanically minded you could take with you?
I’m a little wary of Facebook sales do they have a website you could check?
Best of luck

Hi, unfortunately not. No trading name so can't check reviews etc. Basically treating it like a private sale. I'm driving to South Wales (1.5hrs from me) and don't know anyone good with engines unfortunately. Thanks

Good luck but don't put a deposit down until you see it. There's loads of beds to fit a Kombi which are fixed in the floor anchor bolts for around £500. Just need a decent mattress.

Yeah, if he’s doing vans up and selling them then he’s a trader and you should be afforded the consumer protection that comes with buying from a trader.
But……….if you’re happy with the price and happy to treat it as a private purchase then that’s fine. You might get a great deal that way.
But remember ‘caveat emptor’
