Do people use pop top covers for autumn or winter camping ? We don’t seem to be able to get any heat up there in our LWB.

Trying to get a feeling if I should buy insulation and if it actually makes any difference.

Not used ours yet but reckon the biggest benefits are blocking out the sunlight to aid sleeping and keeping the canvas cleaner.

Reimo roofs are insulted, holds the warm in well when the roofs down. You need a canvas wrap when the roofs up

LWB / SCA set up. Tried a Rainbow pop top wrap with limited success. If you’re using the roof to sleep in cooler seasons then a heater is essential and / or a decent quilt / sleeping bag…. Thick sockets as your feet suffer down the pointy end.
if not, you can leave the roof up but bring the ceiling down and close it up.

Pucer screen for my lwb reimo easyfit.
Use it loads, great for keeping cool/light out in summer and essential in cooler weather. Left it on all week in Cornwall a couple of weeks ago, lots of rain and cool night temps, made it a lot more pleasant.

I can fit it myself too but I'd not call it easy as a one man job, especially if you have already put your awning up.

Biggest issue for me though is that you can't see out the window of a morning , not sure if the posher/expensive covers have windows/roll down panels?

especially with the boys............block out that sunlight for a slightly longer sleep!!! It does help keep things more cozy and provides a degree of sound insulation too

Surely, by the time of year that it’s cold enough to need an insulated pop top, the shorter days mean that light shouldn’t be an issue when trying to sleep. As for the roof being ‘insulted’ (@Alan Watts) and needing ’thick sockets’ (@Wills), I really don’t know what this world is coming to.

When we were up in the hills of Spain last week, the night temperature outside got down to 2 degrees. I set the heater at 15 degrees when we went to bed. I was far too warm in the pop top during the night with only a thin duvet, although it was cooler up there than it was downstairs. I'll certainly set it at a far lower temp next time I think.
The temperature outside was warm during the day, so I guess the van still retained some warmth.

Whoever’s in the pop top needs to man up including kids. Warm air rises so the warmest air in the van will be in the pop top.

Hi,

We have a 'Rainbow Screens' pop top wrap for our LWB. Got it earlier on in the year and have used it twice. it does make a difference. Especially with the heating on. We have a diesel heater and they are quite over powered for the vans but the standard pop top canvas does struggle to retain the heat - so you would have to have the thing on high to achieve any kind of warmth up top, especially with the bed down. The cover solves this problem with the added benefit of blocking out most of light that come through the canvas and lessoning the sounds from outside the van.

They are not cheap at around £300 but worth it for the chillier months.

Cz.

@DXX. shouldn't that be 'person up' in these PC days?
Possibly but if it’s cold enough there won’t be much external evidence of gender.
Offshore survival experience shows that women survive longer in the cold.

@DXX and @Ayjay - can we accommodate, I mean make allowances for those who have yet to determine how they identify, gender fluidity, etc etc etc!

*regrettably I cannot accommodate in my pop top!!!

If it’s cold I’ll sleep with anything, the definition of cold has slipped in recent years.

Thanks so far everyone - I’m going to try and see what I can come up with myself as a weekend project based on Thermawrap insulation roll.

I’m gona try make flap down windows as it’s quite nice to have daylight in without having to keep putting the cover on and off I guess.

We’ve got the Webasto heater also and yes it’s like an oven downstairs whilst the kids are all tucked in upstairs. I guess it’s a fact that the blower direction is into the van and not upstairs.

We did buy a plug in low wattage campervan heater for when we are on hook up that seems to blow in the right direction and also provide a trickle heat easier to control - nice little bit of kit.

If I can get something to work with my DIY job it might be worth a try for half term on the Gower in a few weeks.

Have thought about getting a bit of ducting to redirect the heat from the Webasto but haven’t got round to it…

If you park on a slight incline or chock the pop top bedboard slightly the warm air will circulate towards the opening above the cab easier.
