Rainbow screen blew off twice last weekend

So last weekend away and the winds were gusting from storm Kathleen; forecast said that the gusts were up to around 50mph on site in the New Forest. No problem with the pop top and I didn't think the wind was that bad but our Rainbow Screen blew off twice. We were parked tail into the wind and it lifted from the rear of the passenger door and then pulled the Velcro around the mirror undone before flapping onto the front screen.
Have been away in much higher winds where we have bricked it with the pop top and lowered it but the Rainbow screen has been fine.
Were we just unlucky with the direction of the wind? Has anyone else had their Rainbow Screen lift off?

Bungees.

We have an Olpro screen, and at Langdale in November I had to bungee the screen on to stop it blowing off (as it is 3 separate pieces fastened by velcro).

Round the door handles and over the screen, I use 4 linked together. They live in the driver seat base, in that long pocket that I could never find any other use for.

As with you, the wind was coming from the side / back so gets under the screens.

that’s a great idea for stormy weather, I will add a reel of bungee cord ( no hooks) to my zip tie/Gaffa
tape emergency camping kit

@EAN - We've had the same issue with storms that start the next letter of the alphabet from the last one!

Lost it three times :(
Found it three times. :D

Ended up stitching a male / female clasp onto the velcro bit around the wing mirror.
Not lost it since.

Not in the van but around the garden I've noticed the recent round of storms had a very strong gust element and we've had several things move/get damaged that I now have survived just fine in higher but constant winds.

Hmm, mine is one piece; I wonder if the extra door seals you can buy would hold / clamp the inner fabric enough to prevent it?

@CAB

Will look into Bungee cord round door handle (or something similar), but I'm very precious of my paintwork.

@moomin-j That is a good upgrade.

We were camping down on the Jurassic Coast a few weeks ago in a gusting Force 6 that passed through in the early hours. Our Rainbow exterior screens were constantly being buffeting with the rear one being pulled completely off the rear window and pulled back by the elastic straps. This made a heck of a racket as it kept smacking against the window constantly which prompted senior management to insist yours truly resolve the issue so we could get some sleep. With no option but to go outside in the howling wind I removed the cover. Fortunately, the front one was OK.

Looking around the carnage of the campsite the next morning, we noticed several campervanners had had their thermal covers blown off overnight. One unfortunate couple not only had their screen cover blown off but also had both windscreen wipers wrenched off. In their efforts to keep their screen covers in place they had parked the wipers on top of the covers.

The lesson learned was not to bother putting external covers on the van when strong winds are forecast and if you do use covers, never use your windscreen wipers to hold them in place.

The other week on a site a guy had used a kit that had the little rubber suckers and the metal eyelets. He was saying just punch a little hole in the corners of the cover, press fit the eyelets and then you can secure the corners to the outside of the windscreen using the little suckers, similar to the internal rear screen fixings. I’m going to do this when I return from my travels.

What a simple idea. Love this forum.

I thought one of the big "benefits" of external screens was the absence of sucker marks  Our internal screens have never blown away;)

Place your wipers half way up before putting screen on then fit screen with wipers on top of screen - no movement then.

We've had a lot of problems with blowing off in the camper, finally figured out it's the fried red onion but how would you replace such a key ingredient?
I wondered where you were going with this when I first started reading it, then I got to the onion part….phew!

I detest threads like this. Not only had I made a promise not to fill the van with those little 'essential just in case items' like

"that’s a great idea for stormy weather, I will add a reel of bungee cord ( no hooks) to my zip tie/Gaffa
tape
emergency camping kit"

and now I need a

"A Karcher window vac is fab with dealing with any condensation year round"

I thought 'stealth purchases' had stopped when I stopped cycling everywhere :p

We have a Karcher window vac that the Chief Domestic Engineer uses for the house windows. Tried it in the van & gave up. It can’t get into the nooks & crannies of the van windows & it’s another semi-useless lump to carry around. We’ve found a microfibre cloth works better for us.
