Rear interor lights staying on

I'm in the process of doing carpet lining and kombi seats in the rear of my van. I,ve bought a ply roof lining pre carpeted with led lights pre fitted. I'm wanting the rear lights to come on when I open the side door or rear. Trouble I have is when trying to use the original interior light wires, the light goes on when I open the doors but stays on when shut and engine running. I've two lots of mini harness,s for the original rear lights, each has three wires, a brown, a red with a black tracer and a brown with red tracer, is it possible to use these wires or do I need to wire a switch in.

There are buttons on the central overhead panel (above the windscreen) that control how the rear lights function. The buttons can be set to turn on the lights when a door is opened or set to remain on/off.
This is assuming the lights are connected to the OEM wiring
