Rear View Camera and Dash Cam

Hi folks, wonder if you could recommend a good rear view camera and dash cam. I’ve just been quoted around 700 pounds to supply and fit which seems a bit steep. Many Thanks

Most people have recommended the thinkware item previously. I think they are now marketing the F800 pro.

I use one of these for reversing. Mounted on right of dash board. Cable runs down right hand side of the van and takes a feed from the reversing light at rear light cluster. Originally I had the camera mounted under the bumper but you really need to be looking down on the bumper to get some perspective on the distance from the bumper to the obstruction behind. So for now it's temporarily mounted on the light cluster. I'm planning to hide the camera inside the tailgate spoiler in the near future.

For a dash cam I use an old Samsung S3 phone mounted on the dash, running Autogaurd app.

A fair bit cheaper than 700 quid.

I bought a blackvue DR490l-2ch dash cam a couple of months ago from Halfords £240 mainly because of the rear camera & a good parking mode , I have found it pretty good as you use the dash cam 3.5" screen either displaying front , front / rear view split, or rear full screen and can use it to aid parking

H Dieseldonkey,

I have just installed an Autovox M1 this weekend exactly as you describe taking the power direct from the green with black trace cable where it enters the van (my camera is taped inside until I get this sorted and cut a hole). I am getting the issue reported elsewhere that the camera is fine when the engine isn't running but the picture breaks up when the engine is switched on. I understand that this is to do with the supply to the reverse light and the bulb failure system, but wondered why you haven't had an issue with it.

How did you earth yours? I have taken it off the bodywork, but if you know which of the cables to the rear light cluster is the earth I wonder whether this would be better?

If it isn't obvious, I'm a complete novice, so any advice is appreciated.

Hi @Tardis driver . The only time I experienced interference was when I trialled some LED bulbs as reversing lamps. I ended up putting the original filament bulbs back in place. I'm trying to recall but I think it may have been the earth on the bodywork that I used, in the area of the jack.

Have you tried unplugging any USB adaptors from the 12v cig sockets to see if this reduces interference, when the engine is running.

I did consider ferrite rings around the cable when I had the aftermarket LEDs in play but as I said, reverted to original bulbs instead.

Something like this perhaps. Although I've never used them myself yet, so can't speak to their effectiveness. Maybe someone else on the forum can advise on this.....

If you have a look above the high level brake light, in the photo below, you can just see where I mounted the camera in the end. Allows you to see obstacles relative to the back bumper, and bikes on a tow bar mounted bike rack.

Thanks @Dieseldonkey I'll give the suppressors a try and double check the quality of the earthing. Your install looks very neat. I don't have a spoiler, but will find a suitable location eventually!

Just an update: I couldn't seem to clear the interference, so in the end I abandoned trying to connect into the reversing light circuit. I added a switched 12v power plug instead. This just means that I have to switch it on when reversing, but is extra handy for keeping an eye on the tow bar mounted bike rack or trailer when you are motoring. It's not an elegant solution, but it works fine for me.
