Going to the french alps in a few weeks and realised my chains are too small for my new van, and they are a pain to fit, so I'm after some snow socks.

Snow socks aren’t legal in France or they weren’t when I last went.

Plus they really don’t work too well. You really need chains.

Don’t forget in France you need chains in the car, it’s a legal requirement.

They are legal, Auto Socks being the first to be accepted back in 2010, but all snow socks are now accepted.

Drove to Les Menuires today with a moderate climb on ice close to our accommodation. Loads of cars with winter tyres just couldn't make it up the (not so) steep climb and those with snow socks also struggling. Weissenfels snow chains were a pain to fit (really should have practiced before) but when they're on, wow, no problems whatsoever.

Got some unused Auto Socks on Ebay, half the price of new. I'm happy with that.

Are those 18" wheels? Did you have any issues with clearance with the chains on? All the manufacturers want me to buy the ones that don't wrap around the inner side of the tyre - I'm guessing for clearance to the front strut.

Yes, 18 inch wheels with Michelin Crossclimate tyres 235 55 18. Lowered by around 65mm I think. I only drove a very short distance but didn't notice any problems / noise.
